Aoudad down! Thanks Mulie Mike !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - 03/22/13 05:51 PM
Last fall, my buddy and I booked a 5 day self guided Aoudad hunt with Mulie Mike. Well, being the lucky guy I am, 3 days into the hunt we hadn't seen anything except rocks and cactus!! LOL. Long story short, the weather couldn't have been worse, the sheep just weren't moving and we couldn't seem to find them.
We did walk right into the middle of a covey of blue quail that I don't think had ever seen a human being. My buddy and I stood there in disbelief with 18 quail walking circles around us chirping at us from 3-4 feet away like "what planet are you guys from?" I have hunted all my life but was an experience I will never forget!
I called Mike the evening of our 3rd day to let him know that we were going to call it quits due to the lack of movement, and he said "I will get with you next month after our next guided hunt and get you guys back out for a couple days..." WOW are you kidding me?? This was a self-guided NO GUARANTEE hunt on a ranch that I had previously hunted that I knew for a fact had good sheep on it and this guy (that I had booked with 1 whopping time previously) was gonna let us come back when the animals were moving better!! A quick pep talk to my buddy and we were making plans for another short little 1300 mile round trip in March to give it another try for a couple days.
Well, as it turned out, that was just what we needed. After completely ruining a pair of boots (and my body) hiking countless miles in some of the most rugged terrain for 5+ days, I was rewarded with my 2nd (and best) free range Aoudad. He was broomed off a little on the ends, 31.5" length 11.5" bases, I know you guys have killed bigger/better but I couldn't be happier with him. I have no idea what he scores, but he is in MY record book and that is all that matters to me.
Many Many thanks to Mike, he didn't have any reason in the world to offer to let us come back for round 2 but the fact that he did(and never hesitated) speaks volumes to the kind of outfit he runs. From my previous experience, I would have recommended Mike to anyone looking for an Aoudad hunt, now I may have to put up a billboard on the interstate!!!
