Rarest/Most bizzare exotic you ever seen - 06/03/12 10:51 PM

I have seen quite a few oddballs that you don't find at your average hunting ranch.

While hunting at Knowltons Laguna Vista Ranch for Grant's, the place we were at had a warthog.

Then one guy I talked to talked about an Orbi. He guessed it would possibly go for 50,000. Then Blue Duiker, and the two Dik-Dik's.

Guenther's for about 2500
Kirks more I forget like 6000

But what is the strangest exotic hoofstock animal you had ever seen in your life(auction, hunting ranch etc.)

Though browsing the web I found a guy with a Takin for sale.*

Lots of exotics at 8 point ranch including giraffe, not hunting them but they are there.

Seen some New York Yankee's at The Ballpark once. They sure looked out of place.

Wow $50,000?

You could kill a hundred of them in Africa for that.

I have seen Dik-Diks for sale on exotic classifieds for 4k a piece.

I still think those Chinese Water Deer are cool looking critters, but I'm not sure if they would be rare in Texas. I guess the rarest I've seen in Texas would be Cape Buffalo.

Ugliest thing was a Pierre davids, I can tell you that

Is the Chinese Water Deer the one that looks like a vampire deer?

I would have to go with eastern bongo or markhor

Bongo's are cool

Bongo has to be it for me, man there pretty animals

Re: Rarest/Most bizzare exotic you ever seen - 06/04/12 07:10 PM

I have yet to hunt exotics. High-fenced operations are hard for me to get interested in, and the prices are absolutely out of my league.

Re: Rarest/Most bizzare exotic you ever seen - 06/04/12 07:52 PM

Oh, forgot to mention. I know someone who had a Forest Buffalo and a Saiga. Ranch here in Ohio. Guy could get nearly anything huntable African or Asian hoofstock in at incredible prices.

$1200 for a Thomson's Gazelle. Lodging, skinning etc. all included. And it was a challenging hunt. Shame the last Thommy he had was like 8 years ago.

He also had a Cape Buffalo for $1500 about 5 years ago.

WoW!!!!! That's unbeatable in Texas

Re: Rarest/Most bizzare exotic you ever seen - 06/04/12 08:18 PM

Yeah. He had a Nubian Ibex for $3000. Just recently

Then $750 for Chinese Water Deer which he had 5 years ago.

And $4500 for a 29 inch Nile Lechwe.

Shame I spent $8500 for mine and it was only 26 inches, and the fact I shot mine like a day after he announced he would be getting it in. *facepalm* XD

He had a 32 inch Red Sheep for $1250.

And I shot a gold medal Armenian Mouflon off of him for $750.

That's what he's had in the last 5 or so years, that I remember. Sure he had more.

But the he HAS the ABSOLUTE BEST PRICES FOR WHITETAIL.

I'd say the neatest exotic I've seen seen is a white bull elk.

The ugliest/wierdest - jacobs 4 horn ram. I took one look at it and wondered why on earth would anyone want one of them butt ugly things..but then I suppose people look at some of my animals on the wall and think the same things (I know my wife does)! smile

The Pere David deer I shot on Saturday was pretty bizzare looking:

The hunting ranch I mentioned before, I know this isn't really an exotic 'exotic' but he had a Stone Sheep there about a dozen years back. It was in the lodge photo album.

Pretty good looking one too.

Re: Rarest/Most bizzare exotic you ever seen - 06/05/12 05:57 PM

I worked at the 777 ranch for three years and saw just about everything on the ranch. I think the coolest was a caucasian tur. The most unique thing I ever saw was not there however. I saw a Mouflan/stones sheep cross that was amazing.

Re: Rarest/Most bizzare exotic you ever seen - 06/06/12 07:16 PM

Most bizarre exotic I have ever seen was a steel blue bull Nilgai swimming across Baffin bay and onto a small island. I guess he was off the King. It's good thing it was a long ride back to the truck.

Re: Rarest/Most bizzare exotic you ever seen - 06/08/12 12:06 AM

Not all that rare, but dang sure unique. This is a Pere David deer that a friend of mine killed on our ranch in Clarendon.

There were some muntjac that escaped from the Clovis Zoo a few years back. Heard they have been seen as far east a Muleshoe, but not sure what the guidelines for hunting them would be.

That is interesting!! I've never heard anything about this...

If they are free-ranging in Texas, then there are no regulations/seasons on hunting them.

Not that rare I dont know, came across a really nice Springbok by itself on some low fence in Utopia. Didnt know what it was at the time so let it be and now that Ive been to Africa and being able to eat them I kick myself thinking about that great table fare that I just let walk away.

I was in Concan floating the river one summer and ended up meeting the people up at the front shop. Was drinkin a few and talkin to a guy bout hunting. Ended up he was a guide down there and ended up takin me to a huge neighboorhood thats fenced off with all kinds of exotics. Was crusin through till he found what he wanted to show me. It was a HUGE axis and what made it so crazy was that it had 3 giant drop tines of the left side that mirror imaged his top tines.....iv never seen one like it so thought it was cool

The color picture is giant forest hog from West Africa, the black and white is called a birbosa or something like that. There's one at the San Antonio zoo.

Okapi (below) are beyond strange, the diminutive Muntjac deer have always fascinated me & ditto on Bongos being the most beautifully strange animals in the hunting world!

The rarest I've seen would have to be Pere David and/or eland and/or Nubian ibex and/or wildebeest. I haven't been to any huge ranches like the 777 or YO or anything.....the biggest would be Rattlesnake Springs and Purple Sagw when I was real little

For most African Game your about a dozen years too late. Though one thing I can say about Whitetail is that he offers 150-160 class bucks on special for about $1500. I got a 18 point 192 B/C Monster for $4500 along with a gorgeous 173 mainframe 10 pointer for $3000 earlier in the year. He had a 270 class buck for $7000, shame I missed the chance to be able to harvest him, I was hunting for Fallow Deer frown

And the place is called Double D Ranch. Located in Mcaruther Ohio cool

He lives in San Francisco and my buddy in Ctr. Point who's guided
him for antelope over the yrs. says he has a lot of B&C records
and never sends them in..does the hunting for himself..and he sometimes sells Cabela's and Bass Pro Shope the heads to mould the horns for their displays...He's old as I so he must still be
getting around well...Don
