$750 Axis

Posted By: don k

$750 Axis - 06/05/10 11:06 PM

I have a couple of axis that have gotten into about an 80 acre pasture where I have some of my Ibex. The biggest one is at least 25", probably a little more. This is not a canned hunt. I would like to at least get the large one out of there.

That is a great deal and Don is a super fellow to know and hunt with. I have one of his $750 axis on my wall, was very happy with the experience.

Just a few yards closer and.....THWACK!

Very fair price for that 25" size advertised!

Can you get close enough to take him with a bow?

He was a lot farther than you think. I had the olympus all the way up on telephoto. Thanks Curtis, I am not in the axis game to make a living and I hope I am not stepping on anyones toes. They get into my place everyonce in a while and then they start tearing up the fences. I have never seen two males of any breed that could tear up a net wire fence the way axis do. On my new fences I am using "stay tuff". I don't think they can do much damage to it.

Re: $750 Axis - 07/07/10 12:07 AM

Yeah your priced right for that size of axis and it seems like a fair shake to me. I'm amazed that it's not sold yet!

Deerhunter61,

This is a link to photos of the axis I took, my brother (Army fatigues), and some others that came off Don's place a couple of years ago:

Correct. No offense to anyone but years ago when myself and a pardner had a hunting organization we had some bad experiences with bow hunters. I swore then that I would not put myself in that spot again.

Re: $750 Axis - 07/07/10 11:54 AM

Understood This is why all operations should have a shooting test for all hunters. This will help find the ones that can and can not shoot a weapon.

This hunt should sell quickly and if it does not we would like to look at it for a black powder hunt maybe in August.

Re: $750 Axis - 07/16/10 12:03 PM

All I can say is that things must really be bad out there. I really feel sorry for those of you that do hunting for a living. If I can't even sell a axis buck for $750 I don't see how the outfitters can make a living in hunting anymore. We used to get $750 and more back in the 80"s for them. We had to pay the land owner $500 for Axis, blackbuck and fallow. Aoudad cost us $800. Hopefully the economy picks up soon or there are going to be some real cheap hunts or a lot of people out of business.

Re: $750 Axis - 07/16/10 01:35 PM

He would be in the freezer already with us... But you are correct the economy is in a bad way and folks have had to cut back on extra things to pay bills....

Agree on the above. With the exception of my doe hunts and Koeing, I cant get hardly any hunters to book. I do think the economy has a majority to be the Reaper of Bad news.

Re: $750 Axis - 07/30/10 12:20 AM

I am interested in this hunt as well as a couple of whitetail hunts.

Re: $750 Axis - 08/01/10 02:06 PM

That buck in the picture sure does look bigger than 25". I have killed a few and they were that size and measured at least 30". I might have to jump on this one though.

Where is the ranch located?

Posted By: don k

Re: $750 Axis - 08/01/10 04:46 PM

About 3 miles out of Bandera. I would rather guess him low than say he is longer. He won't make 30" though. He probably would in a year, but I don't want to keep him that long. It is a wonder he and one from outside haven't started working on the fence yet.

Re: $750 Axis - 08/12/10 09:59 PM

Make sure you post trophy pictures and measurments after the hunt. I'd be interested in how he finally measured out.

Posted By: don k

Re: $750 Axis - 08/12/10 11:33 PM

Sat. is the day. Will take measurements and pictures. I have about 5 acres here at the house where I have a couple of my Ibex breeding males and the males that I have taken away from the nannies. A couple of days ago 2 spike axis showed up in the pasture. Also a 2 year old axis male showed up in the pasture where there were only whitetails before. If something doesn't happen one of these days there will be more axis than whitetail in the hill country.

Re: $750 Axis - 08/13/10 01:32 PM

That's the truth. A friend started with 4 a few years ago on a 600 ac high fence place. There were whitetail there as well. Now they estimate 40~50 axis, and whitetails are almost never seen.

The does frequently have twins, and they've even had a couple cases of triplets. Breeding multiple times per year. Won't take long for LOTS of Axis.

Re: $750 Axis - 08/13/10 04:41 PM

I'd prefer to keep the Whitetail. Just ask the Aussies about the effects of invasive species.

Guess the only good news is that Axis hunts should get cheaper.

Re: $750 Axis - 08/13/10 07:43 PM

Here is Kerrville you'd be amazed at the number of free range axis. I live not far from the middle of town and have seen axis at the bottom of the hill near my house.

You're absolutely right. I'd say the highest concentration of free-ranging Axis is around Kerrville/Bandera and in Junction along the Llano River. TONS of Axis there!!

Re: $750 Axis - 08/14/10 12:12 AM

I took an axis doe off a low fence place west of Hunt, Texas in 2003. I saw at least 75 animals in two distinct herds within a hour. It's good they're so tasty.

Re: $750 Axis - 08/15/10 02:28 AM

The saga is over. I have good news and bad news. The good news is that the axis are gone. The bad news is that the larger one took a run at the fence and tore a hole is it about 5' off the ground and went through it so I have no measurement and Colton has no axis. His Dad took the smaller one. Still an enjoyable hunt with 2 fine gentlemen.

i had a blast even though he got away! thats hunting for you, thanks again Don, it was still worth it coming down. i cant wait to make it back down there and try and get one, if the opportunity comes. one of the hardest hunts ive been on and they are slick animals.

Re: $750 Axis - 08/16/10 04:17 PM

I also had a great time and it was a pleasure to hunt with Don on a truly beautiful ranch . It was also really neat to see all the really nice white tail bucks he had in velvet . There will be some spectacular hunting there this fall .
Thanks again Don for all your hard work .

Re: $750 Axis - 08/16/10 06:34 PM

Axis are one of the craziest animals alive. They are pretty, but they are very high strung and can fall over dead from the least little bit of stress. On our ranch I have to keep an area off limits to hunting. If not, when we have someone putting on a stalk for rams or goats the axis would be hitting the fences. We had a few that just stressed out and died. Now they can go to this sanctuary and hide.

Kinda like Mouflon if you get them cornered. How are yours doing, you have some really good looking Mouflon.
