Birds won’t commit

Have been hunting in Devine past couple mornings and have been using some hen decoys in the middle of the field. Gobblers seem to come fast when I am calling but stay about 50-60 yards away. Anybody know why they might not go in for the decoys? Thx

I'd put that decoy very close to you off to the side from the direction you might think they're coming from. Have it facing away. If you can I'd have it near a wood line or somewhere where it looks like she could walk away and disappear. Might even put the decoy away and let them come in looking for her. Probably wouldn't call a whole heck of a lot either. Play hard to get.

What kind of decoys are they? Toms can wary of lesser quality decoys, especially if deployed in an open area like a field. My advice would be to try to get them coming into a brushy area where they have to be in range in order to see your decoys and/or where it thinks the “hen” is calling from.

Thanks for reply’s and I read head reality series. Could it be that I have a jake set up sort of near the hen decoy? Maybe try without jake?

I'm no expert by no means, but this is what I have learned. Set decoys up no futher than 20yds from me. If a Tom hangs up like you say, quit calling and just be patient. They seem to hate the silent treatment. May take some time, but they always seem to come back.

Don’t use decoys .

If you're setting up in the same place...change it...move 100 yrds either direction. keep decoys closer to woodline, facing into the woods. Try the decoys one more time. If they balk again, remove the decoys and try it that way. Once you have the gobblers headed your way, shut up and let them find you.
