Rio Grande or Eastern?

I'm kind of new to turkey hunting. Can anyone tell me if these are Eastern or Rio Grande turkeys? How can you tell the difference?

Rios The way to tell id the tips of the feathers are light buff colored on Rios. The tail feather tips are chestnut on easterns.

Thanks! I've never had that many before but I just got my feeder going in a new spot a couple weeks ago and all of a sudden I'm swarmed with them!

Well about the end of October if you need help eliminating some of them I am sure you can find a few volunteers on here
Of if you have bow you can start next weekend.

you never told us where ur hunting? easterns are only found in far north east texas and some counties in east texas, two things you will notice, easterna have shorter legs and light color tips on tail feathers

Biggest thing is where you are hunting....fans don't mean much although alot of people put stock in the difference in colors.

A guy on here proved that theory wrong as he posted 4 pics of different fans from birds he has taken....

All 4 were Rios although people guessed Eastern on 2 of them.

So who knows these days except if your in West Texas....it will be a Rio

Well if the picture was taken around I35 and westward they are Rios, and from the looks of those mesquite trees and the land scape ..I'd say you're in rio country. Overall rios have lighter rump feathers ranging from buff, beige, and even pinkish...but as stated in the post above there's no telling. I have a rio fan that's as copper as an eastern and one that's as white as a Merriam's.
Most of the eastern turkey's you see as TX Deer Hunter stated are mostly in extreme east TX east of I45...especially in Red River, Bowie, Angelina, and Sabine counties. There are also a few in Montgomery Co. and even around the Matagorda area. They are bigger bodied birds with dark cooper colored rump feathers, but I've even seen a few of them with beige rump feathers.

Grayson co is the western most co with easterns and those are hybids for most of the co. They were transplanted into the Hagerman wildlife Refuge

yeah rios are the primary turkey of texas, even if youre closer to the red river thand the rio grande...not very many easterns in texas at all...not like tpwd had wished anyway. i grew up in smith county and tpwd tried for years to get easterns established in the sabine bottom wma, but to hardly any avail. if you see easterns you should let them be because it took alot of try to get em back in east texas as strong as they finally are.

btw TXhogslayer72, it looks like your puttin out way to much corn. the turkeys did put a dent in it but leavin that much on the ground every night, you will probably end up with hogs tearin up that beautiful feeder fence...just a suggestion. props on the set-up though...nice!!
