Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/18/09 05:01 PM

.50 cal if your wanting the best, if you want to just get the job done then .243 or 22-250 will work lol

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/18/09 07:23 PM

Any gun I have in my hand when i see one! Are you looking to buy one, is that the reason for the question? If so, just for pigs. I use an ar15 .223 (i do a lot of predator hunting, as well as pigs), if i was to get one just for pigs it would be a ar10 in .308.

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/18/09 07:59 PM

AR-10 .308 or an M1A in .308

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/18/09 08:00 PM

yea, I was thinking of something light but the 308 would be good too.

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/18/09 08:02 PM

.243 in an ar10 platform would also do the trick

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/18/09 08:06 PM

hard to beat a 308 for performance, price, and availability

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/18/09 08:56 PM

308 is what I use most . I have shot a 140 lb pig with my 223 and it dropped in place

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/18/09 11:12 PM

308

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/18/09 11:22 PM

.308 is my choice but anything bigger than a .223 will do the job. Just stick to head shots!

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/18/09 11:32 PM

If you like the AR15 platform - the 6.8 SPC round is great for deer and hogs.

Just about any gun will work. I just got a 45-70 but that is more for fun than anything. And yeah the headshots are the way to go.

Ive dropped every hog ive hit with my 243, however they were all within 100 yards

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/19/09 01:52 AM

I've dropped 4 or 5 250+ lb boars with my .270. Use the soft points and a neck shot. And these shots have been over anywhere from 50 to 200 yards, and all one shot, no follow up needed. A .270 has better ballistics, and nearly identical knock down power compared to a .308.

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/19/09 02:00 AM

30-06 all the way, really anything will work if you go for headshots though.

My 7mag did a good job on this jokers faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/19/09 03:30 PM

Any gun will do, Hell i took a 250lb boar with a .22.... had to put a couple rounds into him but it killed him. .223, .30-30 with levereloution rounds, .308, .30-06. They all work. I really like 7.62x39 with soft or hallow points. Great under 100yrds.

It all depends on what kind of hunting you plan on doing most. Hunting from a stand with a feeder? A regular deer rifle will always work. Hunting form a vehicle of some type? An auto or lever gun will work great. How far are your shots? Most of mine are were in the wooded areas on the coast and in the briars. No long shots. Think about what you do and then determine what works best for you.

Haha yeah, so then why are you so adiment about getting your .308?? You just have to have that don't you. But anyways, i shot a 400+ lb. boar with my .243 aiming behind the ear hit a little further back becasue he was trottin away. No blood but i knew i hit him. Found him bout 2 weeks later dead. I'm getting a .308 as well so there is my answer.

I am moody I guess because I grab whatever gun I am in the mood for when I hit the door... I admire the 30-06, however often hunt with a .22 or 20 ga. Personally I couldnt imagine a better simple selection of equipment...

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/20/09 02:34 PM

I've had good luck with a Ruger Super Blackhawk 10-1/2", my S&W 13-3 (FBI Issue .357), and have used a .22 or .22 magnum on occasion when I encountered hogs while hunting smaller critters. My "drug of choice," however, is my Marlin .336 using .30-30 LeverEvolution ammo. But that's my favorite for everything from armadillos & rabbits to deer, as well.

If you're buying a gun specifically for hogs, I'd say you've got plenty of good choices. Just pick something that will kill with a less-than-perfect shot. Not that a cannon will compensate for sloppy shot placement, but neither do you want to use something that requires perfect placement to do the job. Beyond not wanting to inflict undue suffering, you really don't want to be wandering around at night looking for a wounded feral hog without something that will effectively dissuade it from seeking vengeance with a less-than-perfect follow up.

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/23/09 05:27 AM

Just got four with my glock 9. It got a little hairy with one boar that had a real attitude. It was to foggy for my ar 10. I still say 308 cause ammo is cheap and everywhere.

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/23/09 06:30 PM

Oh man.. dirtymike, that guys a bad influence

any regular deer cartridge, 243, 25-06, 270, 308, etc..
all work great of course
have shot several with my 44 and 250g hardcasts

I am partial to my 6.8 SPC AR loaded with 110g Barnes for hogs and stalk hunting deer

They have similar ballistics, but they .308 (with same weight bullet) shoots flatter over the greater distance. However, you are correct in that the energy is very similar until greater than 500 yards... but I don't think pig killing is done too often at 500 yards. Both are good calibers, and arguably the .270 is more versatile.

The best gun I have found is a .22LR and shoot em in the gut that way they die somewhere else!

Re: Best caliber for a hog gun - 11/26/09 01:34 AM

Pick a round that is widely available and cheap. at least that is high priority for me in a varminant/hog gun.

I pay about $45 for a box of 30-06 that i like to use in my deer rifle. But i only buy a box like every 2 years. But my hog gun, i go through more rounds and generally don't buy the premium stuff.

Anything you can hit them with!! I had good luck with .308 winchester, .300 Weatherby, .243,.223,.260, 7mm STW, 7mm rem mag, .375 H&H and probably a few I can't seem to remember anymore!!

Let folks know you do that and you'll end up being a poster child for PETA's campaign against all hunters. IMO, if you can't kill something quickly and humanely, don't shoot it.

22mag will give you more range to be a little more effective at that. It is my belief that all feral hogs should die some way or another and it is not sporting or enjoyable to kill them anymore.
