Coon Dog Guys

Coon Dog Guys - 07/20/09 08:47 AM

Another post got me thinking...
I have a real coon problem at my place. They kill my feeders and when I do slow them down with guards and such they suck up all the corn before the deer and hogs have a chance to get to it.
I have lots of questions about this topic but here's a few...
I was wondering how effective coon dogs and a weekend of hunting them could be?
Will it drive the "other" game off my place?
If there are multiple coons at each feeder how many will the dogs tree?

If anyone has dogs would you be interested in coming to hunt some of these pain in the arse pest's?

If you can get a hunter in there with good dogs for one weekend, it will greatly help with your coon problem. The key is to get a hunter who has good dogs, not someone merely wanting a place to take his dogs for training. If the dogs are broke, they will not bother your deer. A deer is smart enough to know if the dogs are chasing them or not. I road hunt my hounds on the larger ranches out here and the deer will stand and watch the dogs and I go by. (I am driving my pickup and the dogs are on the ground, looking for coon or bobcat scent). I have had my dogs tree and have deer lying on the ground within fifty yards and never get up until I shot the coon or cat out of the tree.

I am in Menard, TX which is too far from Dallas/Mexia area. Looks like you may have found someone in nathyn h out of Burleson. Make sure he brings an old dog, not just the 6 month old pup.
I do appreciate the offer but have more ranches around here than I can get over.
Adios,
Gary

I am in Yorktown, Tx and Gary is very right about the deer they just sit back and watch the hounds, I hunt our place with my hounds all the time and my deer never go anywhere, but yeah you are going to want an older dog with the 6 mth old pups, not saying they are not good but pups sometimes get a scent and just want to see what it is, they are not as focused as an older hound. http://s992.photobucket.com/albums/af43/CabezaCreekTaxidermy/?action=view&current=feb1508012.jpg

Great photos! No one can accuse you of being color blind. I think I saw every breed except perhaps a Plott. You would accuse me of being a racist as all I am feeding at this time are registered blues. Years ago, when I was still at the ranch between Devine and Yancey, used to raised registered treeing walkers. I also had a few running walkers crossed with blue that I used primarily on bobcats.
Seems these blues work well in this country where it is usually dry. They just seem to have better noses than most of the other breeds I have hunted.

I think Nathyn meant his six month old pup,...needed some coons on him(training)

The dogs wont hurt your deer...they will still be there.

Nathan when can you do it? I have hog hunters 7,8,9 of August and the last two weekends of August. So the next two weekends or September would be best for me.
Any of those sound good to you?

Nathan, you know your dogs won't hunt. Glad to see you finally got on here. Now you can dump TBH.
Seriously, Cousins, Nathan is a straight up guy even tho he did skru me on a horse deal. He will do you right, even if he don't know a coon from a possum.

Re: Coon Dog Guys - 07/24/09 06:20 PM

Made a circle this morning. Had one really good race and ran a coon under a big rock in a creek bank but was able to get him out treed four others. But one really good races that went over a mile. I love to listen to my dogs work a cold track, get the critter jumped and run it til they catch on the ground or tree. I am having a real tough time finding bobcat sign, may have to go south to get it done.
Weather was great this morning. Lows about 64 degrees and plenty of moisture from the recent rains.
Adios,
Gary
