17 HMR for coyotes

17 HMR for coyotes - 04/19/09 04:26 PM

As of yesterday I've taken a total of 16 coyotes over 6 months. 3 were shot with a 243, 3 were shot with a 45 ACP and the remainder were taken with a 17HMR. I've only had to shoot 3 more than once and it was with the 17. They were running shots that hit in the lungs. One never stopped and the other 2 started spinning and biting. If given a standing shot inside a 100 yards and your target is the head or neck it's more than capable but anything beyond those parameters is risky. With that said, I've decided to put the 17 back in the cabinet and start caring my new 204.

Yeah, the 17hmr is a little light for the yotes.

The 204 will knock the piss out of them, my favorite loads are the hornady 32gr. v-max, really flat shooting and FAST.

HWY_MAN what bullets are you shooting 17gr. or 20gr.?

I've been shooting 17gr. and they seem to be a little light.

A freind of mine had some 20gr. and they seem to be much more effective.

Just wondering?

I use the 20 grain, they have a bit more energy when they hit. They are almost the same trajectory as well. I had a Sweet 17 scope on my 17 and I never had to adjust the BDC between bullet weights.

I have not used it on Coyotes, but I take it when we go varmint hunting so that if we see a coon or skunk we can shoot it semi-quietly and not worry about scaring off dogs or cats. I know people who use it for coyotes though, and as long as you keep it close it will kill them.

I use a .22-250, but I have an AR that I'm working up loads for now. I'll probably switch between those two alot.

AGREE with what you say....but then again, i do not mind "wounding" a YOTE!

No animal deserves a slow death when you can prevent it. This is what gives hunters a bad name. When you are hunting all game needs to be taken out quickly and humanly. Just my 2 cents.

I had a 17hmr what pos. had everything drop that was head shot, and had most things run off that were body shot (besides rabbits). If I am rabbit shooting I also like something more explosive than the 17hmr. I do have a sako 17rem center fire and that is the only 17 for me.

I have killed a few coyotes with my .17hmr they all took 2 shots each the closest was about 100 yards and the furthest was about 150 yards.
I am looking for a .223 for longer shots with a better take down at longer ranges.

.204 is superb on the yotes. I love to hear that "wack" when the 40gr V-max reaches its target.
