Ok, now I'm ready for skunk hunting

Ok, now I'm ready for skunk hunting - 02/21/17 08:34 PM

We have a skunk that's stinking up the place fairly regularly. I've seen him a couple of times, but passed on shooting him. But, last night he (or she) really smelled up the place. So bad that it got me out of bed at 3 am. I got the spotlight and went out front . It looked like a wildlife ad, with 4 or more coons at the corn feeder and a bunch of deer eating grass or bedded down. And there was the skunk. A big one. Boone and Crockett sized skunk. But I had left the rifle in the safe. Dang. And I couldn't be sure of wind direction, and there's no way I'll ever shoot a skunk upwind of the house AGAIN. Soooooo, today I hung surveyors tape from a bunch of low hanging tree limbs, and I got the 223 out. To quote old cowboy movies. "This town ain't big enough for the two of us".

Good luck!

I can come home from my hunts, cut up, ankles sprained, wrecked back, etc., and my wife will take me in. She doesn't like it when I get hurt, but she will take me in and care for me if needed.

If I get sprayed by a skunk, I can't come home...

Already killed 2 this year, a .410 with #4 shot will get the job done right.
Good luck.

If you kill one near camp, you'll smell it regardless of wind direction.

I'll use him for coyote bait, if the dang skunk will show up again. That sneaky devil....

My nose hurts just thinking about it!

A few years ago we had a rat terrier that never learned to leave a skunk alone.
And she was a spoiled rotten lap dog....which can be a bad combination...

I had a sheperd cross that could kill skunks and not get real stinked up! That dog killed all varmints it could catch for years. RIP Cassie.

I bought a house in Fredericksburg years ago and in the first year there I caught 13 skunks in live traps. I kept a couple of big cans of tomato juice. I'd shoot them, then douse the area with juice and the smell quickly was gone.

I have found if you kill them with a shotgun sometimes you can get the skunk on a shovel and into a plastic bag quick enough to keep the odor down.

Shoot him in the spine and he won't spray.
