hunting chairs/killing chairs for high racks? - 04/03/14 03:54 PM

Was wondering if there are any pics of some killing chairs that go on top of high racks looking to build 2 of them seeing the season is over.

I've looked at multiple websites and found some good designs but most of the posts are old... Just trying to see if there is some new designs out there?

and if you want to show off your high racks... i always enjoy seeing pics them too! here's the beast i'm building only about half way done!8x8 up top

that's a nice high rack dennis... i have another rack about that same size but decided to go bigger because if i wanted more than 3 people to go there just wasn't enough room.

Thanks for the pics!

Great thread idea. Going to work on a rack with my nephew this summer to strap in the back of his Avalanche.

Our width is limited to 43" and was thinking about 36" in depth. Only planning on having 2 people using it. I also figured the top rail being 36" high off the deck.

Watching this one for sure. up

Thanks for the replies guys!

that's a good looking rig txvarminter... you wouldn't happen to have any closer up pics of the seats and how they're set up?

Thanks for the pics!

They've been copied so many times it's not even funny so might as well smile

thanks varminter... i like the way that the pedestals are connected to the braces beneath the expanded metal using nuts, washers and bolts.

i'll probably end up copying that aspect of your rack! flehan

but i'm looking for some used swivel patio chairs that can i weld onto an axel hub, then weld a gun rest and a place to hold the light off the arm rest.

Thanks for the pictures! rock_on

We used axles for the chairs on the rack a couple rigs back, I won't ever do that again. The cast iron in the hubs makes the welds not stick unless you use stainless welds and even then they crack over time.

get some of these they are a TOTALLY WORTH IT!!! That's what we used on the current chairs and they are the bomb, plus you don't have to worry about the weld issue.

Nice rig Revo, but my big arse would trip trying to step over that center piece. I'm WAY to clumsy for that hammer tried it with a rack 16 years ago and it almost ended badly eek2

Varminter- thanks for all the information! did you get the mega spindle or the regular size? for 50 bucks i'll probably just end up getting those!

Thats a nice looking rack revo! i would probably get so excited some night that i would trip and fall off of it!
What kind of swivel are you using for the seat if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks for the pics and info guys!

Txvarminter, how does that rack attach to your suburban. I've been thinking of building one for my Tahoe.

That was a simple pedestal boat seat post. It worked great but have since upgraded to an axle/bearing setup. It's heavier but super smooth. One thing I am fixing to change are my lights. Going to the Coyote Light. No more cords and they are super light wt. Plus they blow these Light Force lights away.

My suggestion Nate is have independent lights on each chair gun rest. That way each shooter controls his light=less misses. Plus that light is inline with the shooters gun and line of sight.

I build a base that I bolted on in place of the luggage rack. It's a 1/4"x2" strap with Heavy wall 1 1/4" cross members that I had coated with RhinoLining. There are brackets on the bottom of the rack that straddle the 1 1/4" cross members and have a grade 8 bolt going through them to hold the rack down. I made it this way because the last rack on the camo suburban was bolted to the top and there was no easy way to get it off when you didn't want it up there. With this one I simply undo 6 bolts and lift it off with the tractor.

Revo that is a lot of $ cabbage $ just to not have a cord grin I'll stick with my Lightforce 170RM's

^^ THIS ^^^

Went to using the RM(rifle mount)170 lightforce lights 10 years ago because the light guy can never seem to hold the light in the right place mad

Re: hunting chairs/killing chairs for high racks? - 04/11/14 06:02 PM

Yeah, the lights are high but they out perform my LF lights . No comparison. Small, light weight and out shine those 170's. It's about like when we jumped from $30 Q Beams to LF. I'm going with the best stuff I can get. I also plan on having a FLIR ps32 along too. No more lost critters especially during tx's.

When you get them in holler at me I'd like to see them work on a dark night up against the 170s see if they are really worth the cabbage

i've been looking at the light forces but i really want the coyote lights!
Only bad thing about that is they're a lot of "cabbage"! lol

Thanks, been thinking about it for a long time.Just hadn't known anyone else who had done it this way. Didn't know how the truck would hold up.

Had one on top of our 89 for 8 years with no problems. Suburbans and Tahoes have an internal roll cage that will support them in the event of a roll over so supporting a rack is not a problem

looks really wide, should be plenty of room for everyone. Did you put in more supports from front to back before you put on the expanded metal?
Your smarter than I am at least you are working on it in the off season smile I wait till the day before the hunt and try to finish mine bang

Ya... it's really wide lol 8 feet across and 8 feet long! should fit four people really easy!

I haven't put the bracing across yet because the places where the bracing is going to go is were my chairs are going to get anchored in on each corner,
and in the middle for when i'm by myself, and i can just cut the expanded metal with a torch for the exact spot.

I had a little extra time to put mine together banana
