Daytime Hogs?

We always get pics of hogs at the feeder right after dark but never a picture during the day. Will they ever come out in the daytime?

YEP most of our show up right before dark but I've shot 3 during the day this deer season.

This year I have had a lot of pics of pigs in the daytime, even midday in some cases.

I had a group of 4 that were pretty regular around 10 during bow season.

The last trip I made I had a another group of 4 hitting another feeder every day at 4 when the first feeding went off and would show back up at 5 for second feeding. I ended up getting a small boar out of that group.

There was a thread a while back were this guy posted tons of pictures of hogs he had killed during the day. I'm pretty sure he was using an SBR with an aimpoint running mostly xm193s.

Hogs will move during the day on very overcast days and If not pressured. They also move during the day in areas they feel comfortable sanctuaries, bedding areas etc.

I've never figured this out yet. I have tons of pics of hogs in the daytime and we even hunt them every weekend and they still show up in the daytime. In the last 4 yrs of selling hog hunts, we've only had 2 killed after dark, all the rest were either shot in the mornings or the afternoon.

Been seeing a small group every evening around 5, next week their time is up!

Seems in areas of high pressure I.e, public lands, they go nocturnal. I have seen them though just before sundown and just at sunrise. Most I've seen during the day has been when they were bedded down or in a wallow and I spooked them out.

Hogs will move when they move. How they behave in one area may not be how they behave in another. How they behave one day may not be how they behave the next day.

They don't necessarily go nocturnal if you pressure them in the day time. If you hunt them at night, they don't necessarily become diurnal.

They may come to your feeder every day at 5:00 and then mysteriously stop, change times, etc. They don't have day planners and they don't wear watches.

I think a lot of folks probably misunderstand that hogs are not just diurnal or nocturnal. That they "go nocturnal" isn't necessarily true. They may not come out into the open areas until after dark, but they may be fully active, involved in roaming and feeding during the day in secluded areas. Most hunters don't set up stands in the middle of the woods with very limited fields of view such as in the deep dark woods. They set up stands with large fields of view...which is where you may not be finding your hogs in the daytime. So based on the stand hunter's perspective, the hogs have gone nocturnal when in reality, they just aren't active in open areas. Hogs will bed when tired and they will feed when hungry.

From everything I have gathered so far, the most predictable hogs are those returning to a necessary resource where that resource is limited, such as food or water. Right now where I am, both are available in abundance here in north Texas, so they aren't coming to my watering holes or feeders with any sort of regularity. Come January and February, they are likely to start hitting my feeders more often, but not on any timed schedule per se. The deer don't eat all the corn and so animals snack on it all day and all night.

I have a buddy in west Texas that shoots hogs fairly regularly at his feeders. The hogs don't always come to the feeders, but when they do come, they come right when the feeders go off because if they aren't there then, all the deer and other critters get the corn within minutes.

007hunters son, your hogs will come in the daytime when they feel it is safe, necessary, or when they are being forced out of their safe areas.

Hogs used to be out during the day on all the ranches I hunt. Now with all the publicity on the destruction they cause hog hunting has become very popular. It seems every man, woman, and child shoot at them now. Once that type of pressure was applied they went mostly nocturnal and so did we using night vision and thermal. They seem to feel much safer at night even when heavy pressure is applied.

Also don't listen to people when they say you can not get rid of them. You may not kill them all but you can run them off large stretches of property for a long time with enough pressure. I have one property where they have not come to a feeder or rooted a field in over two years now. Used to kill 20-30 a weekend on that property. Now just across the county road where I do not have permission to hunt they still tear the place up. They are smart enough to figure out where they get killed.

Thanks guys for all the advice. What im absorbing here is you just have to be in the woods a lot and if they walk out then they walk out and if they don't they don't. And you cant do much about it.

Hunt them before a big front or storm and you will increase your chances

+1 we used to have packs of 20-30 pigs that would be up near our houses at our family place in East Texas. They trapped 52 a year ago and not a hog has been spotted since. Although the neighbors still have problems, we dont.

Not really. You can go after them. I mean, if you know about where they bed, do a stalk using the wind. A lot of times, they will be on their feet, rooting around not far from the bed. I've done this a many time and found them. Some I got a shot, some I didn't, but this was with a bow. If I had a gun, could've had a shot every time I found them.

do most of my hog hunting on public land, colder weather hog's will be noving more during day light hours. got video's of hogs sleeping were snuck up on em. couple days later same area easen threw seen hog's they bedded right in front of me, got video, during day. proof tis in the puddig, pudding one foot in front of the other.
