223

Re: Gun? - 12/13/12 10:35 PM

Depends on the distance you'll be shooting and the type of foliage you may have to shoot through if needed. Generally speaking, I would agree with Central Texas's input of .223.

Any rifle with which, you can consistantly place a bullet in a 4 inch circle at 200 yards.

up Good one.

.223, .243, 7mm-08...there are several to choose from. When factoring in costs though, a .223 is probably one of the best bets. There are so many ammo options available and it's cheap enough to not totally wipe out your savings. smile

300 Win mag. That'll stop them.

Re: Gun? - 12/15/12 01:05 AM

I used a 220 and then a 223, but then was seeing more big pigs than coyotes and the 22 calibers weren't putting them down fast enough. I switched to my 260 and OOO BABY they get put down fast now. I used it on a coyote just about 90 minutes ago. It's been real dry here, so when I blasted him I had to wait for the dust cloud to settle. Yup, there he was. Don't try this at home if you want to keep the pelt.

I like my Howa Axium 22-250. I also have a Savage 12FV .223. A Hornady V-max from either one is lethal. Heavy barrels are ok in a blind, but I would not want to pack one too far. They get heavy fast considering all of the other gear. That is when I either take my Armalight M15 or Rem Mod 98 .243.

This is what I used on a big bodied deer with a shot to the chest, he ran 50 yds max. There's a 75 pound difference at least between a deer and a yote. Great bullets by the way.

22-250, 204, 223, 308, 7 mag, 7-08, 243, 25-06, 257, even a 22 mag will work, though a little undergunned itll work. I prefer a a howa 308 with an fmj.

Re: Gun? - 12/17/12 04:48 AM

Yes, for sure. Just be careful of what is behind your targets and careful of how loud that will be if hunting at night.

After many years of shooting yotes with anything from a 22 rimfire to 300 Weatherby I've pretty much stayed with the 243. In the last 4 years I've taken over 200 yotes and the 243 has been the best performer. Tried the 204 for a while and while lightning fast there were several required another shot. 243 with 58 to 70 grainers is a fine yote combo.

Re: Gun? - 12/24/12 09:34 PM

browning A= bolt 22-250 i have bben using for years. recently my son bought a ar-15 223 and i can place a bullet faster and more accurate than he can on that 223. Nothing against those ar rifles but 1 shot is all you need.

Re: Gun? - 12/24/12 11:10 PM

22.250 is my choice . Used to be a 220 Swift but its 2 hard to find bullets .
I have a 2 remingtons and a Howa Axxiom . Both are shooting SOBs . Ruger m77 is another great gun .

30-30. Never shot a coyote over 150 yards away, don't really like to shoot them, prefer to let them eat rats and mice.

If your not really serious about coyotes full time , use your deer rifle it will help to make you a better shot under different conditions with it. IMO.
