Re: Favorite. 223 hunting round - 12/10/12 03:03 AM

i use the 75gr Hornady BTHP or Black Hills 68/69 gr HP with good effect on pigs...these rounds shoot pretty well out of my guns and the reason i use 223 is because of the faster follow up shots i get versus a 308 but i also limit the range to about 150 yards...if they were farther than that on a consistent basis i would opt for a 308 instead

Re: Favorite. 223 hunting round - 12/12/12 03:09 PM

70gr TSX handloads for pigs out of 223.

I normally skip the mousegun for pigs unless that's all I have with me at the time.
When I hunt pigs, I use a 6.8x43 with 95gr TTSX at close to 3K FPS.

Re: Favorite. 223 hunting round - 12/13/12 06:32 AM

Was using 53gr Barnes TSX, now using 62gr TSX thru ar15 with 1:9 twist. If I had faster twist would try 70gr TSX. 62gr leaves a 1 1/2 inch exit wound, which is largest exit wound I have seen from different ammo I have used in the .223

Re: Favorite. 223 hunting round - 12/18/12 12:45 AM

sadly, for me, if I want my winchester md. 70 Ranger in .223 to shoot anything better than a 12 foot pattern at 100 yards, it HAS to be winchester 64 grain power points. And with those....I get cloverleafs out to 300 yards. Go figure?

2 million different loads out there for a 556-223....my rifle will shoot only 1.

I think I need a good gunsmith for a new barrel....somethings got to be wrong with the twist rate.

Black Hills with Hornady 60 grain v-max are hard to beat.

Re: Favorite. 223 hunting round - 12/18/12 04:14 AM

I am just starting out hunting hogs with my ar15. it is an old Colt SP-1. Got one last month with Hornady 55gr SP. But, I have the components for a fast twist build on the way and hope to try out the Hornady 75gr BTHP.

Re: Favorite. 223 hunting round - 01/01/13 12:09 AM

You can not go wrong with hornady 55 gr vmax. They group better than any other type of ammo I have tried and will drop animals in their tracks. Hogs, coyotes, deer, you name it.

Re: Favorite. 223 hunting round - 01/01/13 12:42 AM

Hi Hoot12,

I am with you, the 55 grain VMAX, in my case backed by Hodgdon Benchmark, works great. Prairie dogs to hogs, it does it all. It has proved very accurate for me in .223.

Lately, I am using the new Hornady 53 grain VMAX in my AR's, as it has an improved BC. For those loads the new CFE223 powder is proving to be a great combination.

Regards,

for coyotes I like a 45gr soft point run as fast as you can in 223

Re: Favorite. 223 hunting round - 01/01/13 02:44 AM

What ever I'm feeding my gun that day, if it makes them take a dirt nap that's the one I like.

Re: Favorite. 223 hunting round - 01/02/13 03:18 AM

I've been shooting pigs with 55 grain Barnes. We shot 2 today around 250 lbs and dropped them both. I'm shooting a bolt action not an AR. But I doubt that matters. Rolled a coyote on the run at about 100 yards also

Re: Favorite. 223 hunting round - 01/03/13 04:46 PM

Anyone try the winchester razorback xt in 62 grn? I hear they are both overpriced (about $27-$20 a box) and good.
Posted By: Come And Get 'Em...

Re: Favorite. 223 hunting round - 01/04/13 04:43 AM

Well there's a place where I'll be on a hunt soon that only has the winchester xt's so even if they are overpriced, what isn't? And if they are worth a flip, id like to know because I'll have my local friend pick some up.

Re: Favorite. 223 hunting round - 01/04/13 05:05 AM

Alright, so it seems like a lot of folks prefer the Vmax. I was told that these would break apart too much and that a soft point bullet like the 62 gr Sierra match king would be the way to go. Is the soft point any more effective than the Vmax?

Re: Favorite. 223 hunting round - 01/04/13 02:37 PM

SHOT PLACEMENT supersedes the bullet choice in most cases. Hit them behind the ear and they'll lay down for you. FWIW I have killed them with 55 vmax very nicely.

Yep, I kill 'em with a pine needle and a soda straw out to 300 yards, beyond that I fling a pine cone.

Re: Favorite. 223 hunting round - 01/04/13 03:08 PM

Shot placement is key but of the 22 cal bullets I have tried the most consistent in terms of wound canal/penetration and effective with body shots Swift Sirocco 75gr bonded bullets. Too bad that no factory loads are available but if you reload....

Next favorite is the Nosler Partition 60gr

I've had good success with the Winchester Silvertips as well. Ear/Headshots not needed. Spine shots do the trick just fine.

I've been using the Fiocchi 40gr v-max. Shoots really well in my rifle. Works great on anything I have shot with it. But as with any thing shot placement is the key.
