Armadillo problem

Armadillo problem - 09/19/12 03:31 AM

I live in city limits so discharging a firearm is illegal ;-) But the armadillos are destroying my yard and flower beds.

The only way I am alerted to when they are active is when I let my boxer outside and he goes nuts and tries to get them.

Well somehow, someway, I thinned the Armadillo herd by one tonight ;-)

Any suggestions for baiting them for good "photographic" opportunities?

Armadillos can't really be baited, I've tried it. But if you kill them and the skull is perfectly fine I'll take it.

This skull wasn't very intact. For some reason, it exploded on the top.

As far as tips go, I don't really have any.

OFF TOPIC though, I love subsonic .22 LR ammo smile

I have a Sheridan pellet gun that I used in the city. 3 pumps to sting, 5 to penetrate, 8 to kill. You could dial in (pump in) the amount of lethality you needed. That's a handy little rifle, and you can put a scope on it, though I haven't.

I caught one in live trap while trying to catch a raccoon. Had half a can of tuna in the trap. No Idea!

And would be illegal to use in the city limits as noted by the OP.

I would think the boxer would work, my son has had several hog dogs that would put a killing on armadillos so fast you had to be quick on the button to break them, have one that will still sneak one in if she thinks no ones watchin'.

I watched my dad catch one by hand and smack it against a tree several times until it quit fighting. Not the most humane way to go but effective. I am in no way shape or form advocating animal violence just sharing a strange childhood memory lol

I've had luck trapping them in cages using peanuts. Occasionally you can chase one of those suckers down and beat the heck out of them with shovel.

Many (over 40) years ago I built a home made trail camera for a Boy Scout merit badge project. It was really somewhat clever in a Rube Goldberg sort of way. The camera was mounted to a two foot length of 2x8. A stick about two feet long and 3/4" X 3/4" was hinged at one end. A mouse trap was mounted at the other end. When the mouse trap tripped, it hit the stick which pushed the camera shutter button. A string from the mouse trap was tied over a pile of bait. I could only get one photo per night, but it worked.
Anyway, I tell this tale because I used lettuce at bait thinking I would get pictures of racoons or rabbits. Mostly however, I got photos of armadillos. This was in East Texas where there were a LOT of armadillos, but maybe lettuce would still work as bait. Then again, maybe there were just so many armadillos that I couldn't help but get pictures of them.

The simplest solution is to put down grub killer. That's what they're rooting for.

No grubs, no dillos, no problem.

Try some CCI CB longs. In a rifle, they are quieter than shorts. They sound about as loud as the pump pellet gun mentioned earlier.

$10/hr and they will be taken care of silently and without the use of a firearm...lol

Old pic I found. They are pretty tough creatures, I shot this one from about 15 yards with a g5 SGH and it managed to run/ crawl another 30-35 yards across the fence and into the ditch.

Same problem 2nd year in a row in my yard. Last year my neighbor trapped 2 dillos. He used his fence and some hog panels to create a funnel into a box trap. Caught two within a week.

Took two nights last week for it to look like my front yard had a light drag with a disc plow.....
