It can be a simple 30-30, AR, AK, nice bolt action...ect. In whatever caliber you want, with whatever optics you want.....money is not an issue.

Re: Your ideal "Hawg Gun" - 04/14/12 03:47 PM
If I am specifically going hog hunting, I carry 1 of 2 guns. An AR-10 for normal stand hunting for rapid re-engagement, or a Marlin lever gun in 44 mag for CQB hogs, from like a bow stand or spot and stalk.

Re: Your ideal "Hawg Gun" - 04/14/12 04:17 PM
FN-FAL. Does it all, with a bang. And AK-like reliability.
I have been particularly happy with a .45-70 Marlin 1895, even more so with night vision, but I think my ideal would be a semi-auto comparable caliber like maybe a .50 Beowulf, Bushmaster .450, or .458 Socom, but I am in no hurry to replace the Marlin. It performs very well. The other guns would just be a bit better.

Marlin 1895 in 45-70 will be my next purchase. With a low powered leupold scope one top. Those things just scream hog killer.

Re: Your ideal "Hawg Gun" - 04/15/12 06:59 AM
I had a 1895 and really liked it, but I was a bit off put by the trajectory and capacity. I sold it after a little research- sighting the gun in 3" high at 100 with 300 gr bullets pushing 1900 fps (pretty stout load) leaves it 8" low at 200 yds.

300 sav in a model 99 featherweight wearing a 1.5x5 vari x III.
I have one and it will put three pretty stout handloads shooting a 150 grain BT into an inch all day long.
It is about the perfect velocity to make a BT shine, and while it is just a tool, it is a cool tool.

anything with work to shoot hogs, its not about about what gun you carry its about how well you hunt/shoot

Don't need anything other than that right there. Lightweight, handy, good capacity and rate of fire, plenty of power and range for all reasonable shooting scenarios, and ammo is ubiquitous and reasonably priced. It does not take the weaponary of Seal Team 6 to down a hog...you're not hunting Osama...just a different type of swine. Winchester 94 and Marlin 336 .30-30 excell at this.
However, call me biased or orthodox, but a lever action without wood furniture is as depressing as a classic muscle car with a six cylinder under the hood...

ruger 10/22 or marlin 25m 22mag with my glock 21 on my hip if they get close and thick. Ive dropped more pigs with the 22mag than any other gun I own.
but usually when im in my stand I have some sort of center fire with me.

Re: Your ideal "Hawg Gun" - 04/25/12 12:08 PM
Sometimes it does take a little more firepower. I can't get close to the ones I'm shooting and still be able to see them in the tall grass.

I can tell you from this pass weekends hunt, that shot placement is the key, no matter whet you hunt with. I shot the biggest boar I have ever seen on hoof Sunday morning with a 45-70 at 30 yards. I hit him in the shoulder quartering towards me, with a 325 grain lever evolution bullet. I saw him buckle to his knees, then he jumped up and ran off. I heard him hit the ground and kick around, waited 20 minutes and went to look for him, I guess he got back up and ran off. I have a buddy who who a 200lber a few weeks ago with a 17hmr between the eyes and it didn't take another step, go figure. In the neck for now on!

Re: Your ideal "Hawg Gun" - 05/03/12 10:15 AM
I thought the LR 308 was going to be the perfect hog gun but that turned out to be a big let down, while accurate as all get out and more than enough fire power it was about as handy as a 12 lb fence post. Way too heavy and cumbersome and the damn magazine hung up on every thing. Since my wife won't give me back my STYER 243 I'm setting up a nice little tang saftey Ruger in 243 I picked up about a year ago. I may not be able to get as many rounds out the barrel but at least I'll be able to get the damn barrel out the window. I've went full circle with hog guns and wound up right back where I started from.

It's pretty thick where we hunt so my Marlin 45-70 is the ticket for me. The AR is fun to take but we never get off more than 3-4 shots so the need for a high-capacity mag hasn't been an issue.

Only usually get one shot off at night before the rest go off like a star burst in every direction. lol
So Ill stick with my one shot drop-em gun. A Ruger #1 with a 180 grain .300 win mag. Head, heart, shoulder makes no difference they run about 1 foot straight down.
