Re: TAHC Approved Feral Swine Buying Stations - 02/20/08 07:52 PM

If you have access to keep a bunch on the property where they are caught before hauling them, absolutely it pays off, especially if you are trapping those that are over 100lbs. and up! Keep the small ones to eat and share with friends.

Re: TAHC Approved Feral Swine Buying Stations - 02/22/08 08:42 PM

I have a freind that is a buying manager for Texas for a wild hog slaughter house. he is the one that helps set up the buying stations and buys the hogs from the stations. I haven't checked the prices in a couple of weeks but last I checked it was 28 cents a pound with a 4 dollar head preminum for 100-200lbs. Different buying stations have different prices( They are the middlemen) call around and get the best price.

Re: TAHC Approved Feral Swine Buying Stations - 05/21/08 03:34 PM

Wonder how the increase in gas prices will effect these, it still will cost MORE to get them there then what you would get for them. Plus with it getting HOT durring the day they need to keep the stations open at NIGHT so you dont have overheated, half dead hogs durring the day.

How much to they usually pay for hogs?

Re: TAHC Approved Feral Swine Buying Stations - 06/26/08 12:57 PM

we took in three one time to Goliad. two weighted in at 160 and one was a little over 225. we made $100. of course that was about 5 years ago when gas was $1.40 a gallon.

Quote:

From what I heard in a recent conversation with a friend in Olney, no they really are not worth messing with, won't bring enough to pay for your gas to haul them.

what?? depends on how many u catch. i have a friend that made $2800 in a couple weeks. they were bringing $30-60 each. catch u 10 good hogs and thats about $300-600.

Re: TAHC Approved Feral Swine Buying Stations - 02/18/09 06:51 AM

I sell feral hogs and for a 200 lb u will get a little less than $100 but for a 60lb hog, u will get about 7 bucks. However, most of the time it is worth taking them to the sale barn.

If you really want to know what you can and can not do Call TAHC. If you need a number left me know.

Wild Hog Buyers - 10/27/10 03:56 AM

I am in MAxwell, btwn San Marcos and Lockhart. Have 20-30 maybe more hogs going in a corral trap for a few weeks now. Am going to trap them is there any approved buyers close that can pick them up once I catch them? I don't have any way to deliver them. Or what do I do with them once I catch that many?

Posted By: yam13f

Re: Wild Hog Buyers - 10/27/10 04:14 AM

shoot em.

Posted By: doggit

Re: Wild Hog Buyers - 10/27/10 04:17 AM

I have been, they keep coming. Have been using gen 3 NV, thermal spotter and supressors have shot over 50 this month! Thinking about selling hunts?

Posted By: yam13f

Re: Wild Hog Buyers - 10/27/10 04:19 AM

nice. could make a few bucks!

Posted By: possom813

Re: Wild Hog Buyers - 10/27/10 04:53 AM

I'm not a buyer, but I can come and pick them up for you. We'll stick them in a pen and process them at about 3 a day until they're all on ice.

EDIT: It was pointed out that I failed to mention the pen I would be holding them in is resting on a trailer that has been modified specifically for the transport of large numbers of hogs.

Unless TAHC has changed anything since 2009, when it became legal to sell boars to game preserves, ie. hunting ranches, then the regulations that were posted below are still in effect.

I certainly appreciate the concern, but in the transport and slaughtering of hogs, I assure you, I, nor the few people that work with me, are doing anything illegal in the eyes of Texas or TAHC.

Thank You,
John

EDIT AGAIN: Deleted part of the previous edit, waiting on verifiable evidence that I'm doing something wrong when TAHC and the local GW's say I'm not.

Slightly illegal there possum, one cannot move live feral hogs from the property they are trapped or caught on unless they are going directly to an approved Texas Animal Health Commission Holding Facility or a TAHC processing plant.

sry for the size, but couldn't get it to resize. Could have been updated since then, but I couldn't find where it had been.

Re: Wild Hog Buyers - 10/27/10 09:11 PM

Looks like you can hold them for 7 days on the trailer. I thought it was 10, but it looks like it's seven. Slaughter three or four a day, you'll get 28 done in a week.

Wrong, I have a trailer trap and do the same as below. Game Warden even comes by to see how many we are trapping and gives me his blessing. 7 days though.

Kirk Strauch in Malone, his number has been disconnected since earlier this year. I assume he closed down his station, it's a shame too, because he was consistently about 10 cents higher per pound than everyone else.

Jeff Johnson in Ellis County, his number was going to voicemail earlier this year, I haven't called it in the past couple of months to see if he's still in operation or not.

FYI
Leon passed on of old age I believe?
Benny was a longtime dipper and died of cancer at age of about 45 years old.
They were some good people, and hard workers. May they RIP.

Hogs over 180 are paying 40 cents a pound.

I will get the # for they slaughter plant in Devine and post it here..

The lady will be able to tell you where the closest buyer is at.

Re: TAHC Approved Feral Swine Buying Stations - 03/25/11 06:16 AM

40 cents a pound wouldnt be bad. I could trap quite a few large hogs and make a trip to a nearby buyer. Having 1-2 dozen hogs in the 150-250 pound range would be possible for me to catch, especially this time of year.

If anybody is looking for a place to sell hogs, just call Southern Wild Game Inc. and they will tell you where the closest buying station is.

And call a couple of stations because I suspect a few are not paying what the company says and keeping the difference!!!!

Legally... No. You have to go directly to buyer from each trap or actually each property....

But as long as you aint caught letting them loose and you are disposing of them, I dont believe you will encounter any trouble..

I never have!!!

Plain English

C. Feral Swine Movement Requirements Within Texas:
1. These requirements apply to anyone who traps feral swine and moves them from the premises or location where they were trapped or otherwise captured and moved alive.
2. Acceptable Methods of Movement
a. The feral swine are moved directly from the premises where they were trapped to recognized slaughter facility;
b. The feral swine are moved directly from the premises where they were trapped to an approved holding facility;
c. The feral swine are moved directly from the premises where they were trapped to an authorized hunting preserve;
d. The feral swine are moved from an approved holding facility to a recognized slaughter facility;
e. The feral swine are moved from an approved holding facility to an authorized hunting preserve; or
f. The swine that have been trapped and are being held for transportation to an authorized location, as provided by this subsection, may be held in an escape-proof cage on the vehicle or trailer that transported them from their original premise, or held within the transport trailer itself for up to seven (7) days.

http://www.tahc.state.tx.us/regs/EntryRequirements_Swine.pdf

That means, as long as you don't turn them loose out of the trailer, your fine with moving them around.

Most are bought by the lb. with the rate varying on the size of the animal. The bigger the pig, the more money per lb. you'll get.

Re: Wild Hog Buyers - 01/23/13 05:12 PM

They should be up and running again. The reason (so I'm told) for the stations shutting down is because the packing plants hire mostly illegals, who all go back to Mexico for Christmas. You'd just have to call one of the buying stations and see if they're open yet.

Google " TAHC Feral Hog Buying Stations Texas".

This is only a list of who is still current with their permitting (2 years).
Its accurate within the last 60 days of permitted facilities.
A few have ceased for one reason or another.
Some are private facilities and do not buy or accept animals from the general public.

Its always best to call and find out days open, hours of operation, and terms of acceptance.

So, you catch them and sell them live? Or are they buying dead Hogs? Unfortunately, we are not allowed to transport a Feral Hog. There has supposedly been a lot of Dog Hunters spreading the Hogs across the State so they can hunt them.

Yes, they are purchased alive.
Dead animals are not allowed in any buying facilities and those that die have to be disposed of in accordance with the local County Health Departments rules and standards.

When you say that you are "unfortunate" in not being able to transport animals, that really depends on how you look at it. The problem we have here in Texas has been caused by a multitude of issues, including, but not limited to the transport and release of animals from one location to another.
Dog hunters get the blame for the releasing quite a bit, but I don't think they scratch the surface. Its alot of work to catch an animal and contain it alive for releasing without any assurances of ever seeing that animal again. That is unless you have a facility designed for containment.
Individuals that sell to people thinking they can raise them to the quality of domestic pork or to those that have the misconception that they can release these animals on a small piece of property and contain them for sport. These are the people that have no idea as to the repercussions of their actions. I know the State is stepping up the efforts to stop this, but their resources are limited compared to the number of individuals breaking the law.

Just my .02 on what really started the snowball rolling.

After seeing your post it makes me think that different counties, due to supply, may have different pricing, maybe.

Are you buying dead hogs too? I know there's a place in Hubbard buying them @.40 a pound gutted with heart and liver intact.

There are at least a couple of places in Texas that deal with live feral pigs. They process the meat and package it for sale. It's my understanding that the largest market is Europe, where 'wild boar' is commonly eaten. That's probably why the prices have dropped recently. The dollar has strengthened in the last six months or so, making USA exports more expensive. They're having to lower the price to remain competitive.

I've personally used Kenny long from Cooke county. He does a fast clean job. We had 20 piggies. He offloaded them and weighed them quickly. He gave us our money and we were gone within 20 minutes.

Been on my place for almost 5 seasons now and didn't have a single pig until last summer. Its a problem now so recently built a trap to catch the little boogers. Located in northern Mills County between Brownwood and Richland Springs. Anyone in this area buying, willing to pick up from location?

They either butcher them or sell them to those that turn them loose then hunt them.

I think I saw that some of them end up becoming ingredients in dog food.

They used to be shipped live in containers to the Orient, is that no longer the case?
