Re: new hog gun - 02/02/12 05:39 AM

No , No, No, ... You guys have it all wrong. Go all out, Tikka stainless .243, Nikon Prostaff scope, 5 boxes Hornady 100 gr. shells, grab a nice guncase for it, and a cleaning kit as well.

This way, after the wife uses it ONCE, it will be ALL yours!

Re: new hog gun - 02/02/12 02:57 PM

Let me refraise my question. I was more interested in Make Model Caliber and Accuracy. I was thinking about a mini 14 but have read alot of bad comments on the accuracy. I am still thinking about a 223, but would consider other calibers. If I am going to have a gun accuracy is extremely important. I just read on the forum about the mini 30 with a 3.5 in group at 100yds. IMHO that is not accurate enough. I like to drive tacks in their ear. I do not like to shoot at them I like to have precision bullet placement.

Re: new hog gun - 02/03/12 12:38 AM

Weatherby vangaurd. Comes with 2 stocks. Youth and adult. If she is small the youth make it more comfortable for her. Caliber is not that important if she shoots them in the ear. My wife shoots a 243 with 80 grain bullets. The triger is adjustable and ours will stack at a hundred.

Saw my buddy take down a good sized Hog at 285 yds with a .243, 58gr. just saying.

Re: new hog gun - 02/03/12 02:17 AM

I love the .25-06. If you aren't a short action snob it's an extremely versatile round that's a lot of fun to shoot and hits hard enough for anything up to (and including depending on who you ask) elk and moose. I second the Weatherby suggestion above, those are great guns with a great action.

Re: new hog gun - 02/03/12 02:59 AM

Every hog I've shot with my Browning A-Bolt in 270 has dropped in their tracks! Don't know if recoil from a 270 is too much for your wife, if so Rem 700 in 223 would be great, and as mentioned above in 25-06.

Re: new hog gun - 02/04/12 02:29 AM

Winchester 94, cheap ammo, easy to find, good for defense purpose and SASS, low recoil, good investment.

These sound like two very good suggestions to me. The only problems I'd have with an SKS is that they're a bit heavy.

Re: new hog gun - 03/04/12 03:38 PM

I shoot a Tikka T3 in 7mm08 and 150gn handloads.it is very light recoil and extreme accurate. I have ATN nightvision on mine but sure with a good day scope she would be happy.

Re: new hog gun - 05/17/12 04:21 AM

Ive been using a Winchester medel 94 in 44 gag for heavy brush and close up. And a worked over Mini 30 from Accuracy Systems with a bull barel trigger job basically the works, for longer range and when my wife comes along to shoot. Here is their site http://www.accuracysystemsinc.com/index.php

How about a CZ 527 carbine in 7.62x39 at 5 1/2 lbs equipped with a scope and mounts you should be able to keep it under 7 lbs. The trajectory will limit you to shots of 200 yds. or less but for hogs I don't see it as an issue.

Great little guns, with sweet single set trigger. I like the 223 American version but either caliber would work well.

I shoot as many or more hogs with my favorite truck gun, as anything else. Marlin 1894 in 357mag. Recoil in is is about the same as a 223

Re: new hog gun - 05/17/12 09:12 PM

I bought a cheap Mossberg Maverick .270 last fall. I get about 3/4" groups at 100 yrds with a Bushnell Banner 4-12 x 40 scope. Rifle, scope, 1 box Remington core lokt 130 gr ammo, cheap hard case... UNDER $360 out the door. First hunt after sighting in dropped a 280 lb boar at about 160 yards. It's plenty of gun but won't take your wife's shoulder off. My brother got a Mossberg 4 x 4 with the muzzle break and that helps with the recoil too.

Re: new hog gun - 06/05/12 03:24 AM

Any gun that is centerfire and that fits her will be fine. My other half kills hogs on a weekly basis with a Rossi .223 . Its all about shot placement and being comfortable with the gun.

Re: new hog gun - 06/05/12 09:15 PM

All of these would definitely be successful on a hog hunt. I now use a .30-06 for just about everything. But the best hog gun I've every used where long shots wern't an issue is a 12ga shotgun with slugs. For longer shots, you can't beat a Marlin .45-75 to throw some serious lead at the pigs.(Oh, out to about 125/150 yards, I'd say)

Re: new hog gun - 06/06/12 09:22 AM

.243 with 100 grain bullets. Will drop hogs, deer, and coyotes without hurting her shoulder or your wallet. Get her a rifle that fits her well. No need for the weight of a heavy barrel varmint rifle and no need from the extra recoil kick potentiated from a super light and, or poorly fitted rifle. Something along the lines of a used Savage 110 .243 with 3-9 scope will keep your freezer filled and not empty your pocket too much. Goodluck

Howa makes a youth model 7mm-08 that is a tack driver that would probably be a good fit for your wife. I bought one for my wife a few years back, now I use it more than she does.
