two for one. - 08/12/11 05:43 AM
i had been letting my son shoot lately because he is going back to school soon. tonight he was at a friends house. i went to check feed tubes this afternoon and found them empty even though my son had a kill there Tuesday morning at 3 am. i called him and asked if he cared if i tried tonight and he told me to go ahead.
i got to the lease around a little before 7 pm and ran into a new guy on the lease. we talked for a while then i headed out for my spot. my feeder goes off at 7 pm but i thought the pigs were coming in til after midnight. i turned the corner and saw pigs running away from my feeder. i was for sure i had missed them. i put 2 and 2 together and realized that there was more than one group coming to my feeder. a smaller group when the feeder went off and then a bigger group later that empties the tubes. i think the same thing had happened monday because there was pig tracks under the feeder and the corn was gone from the 7 pm spinning when we got a late start and got there at 8pm but a larger group came in after midnight. i had first thought monday that my feeder had not gone off because the battery was low.
anyway, i hit the tester on the feeder to throw some more corn and added a couple of pile of the mix under the feeder and set up in the stand. around 10 pm, i started to lay down and then i heard a pig squeal in the woods. the lights came on and about 8 medium size pigs came under the feeder. i had told my son that this would be a recon mission to see how long they really take to empty the tubes but the dust was getting heavy. i sighted in a bigger one and let go. down went two. i 110 lb sow and 72 lb boar. didn't plan it that way but the little boy was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
