they tried to steal my hog tube.

they tried to steal my hog tube. - 06/06/11 08:35 PM

this morning i went out to check things. i had added a second hog tube to my spot because the one was being emptied fast. when i arrived, i found one of the tubes but the second one was missing. i found the second tube about 20 yards down the trail and found the screw in cap had been ripped apart.

plans are to add a carriage bolt inside the tube to hook the cable to and put the cable through a hole in the cap so it can be slipped up and down to fill the tube. i was also thinking about adding swivels on both ends of the cable so the cable doesn't get too twisted.

Hogs are VERY strong animals. I have had them dang near eat a tree to get the pipe off of it.

that's the plan. not sure if it is a scent thing but it takes a night before they hit it after filling. tomorrow night i will be looking for vengeance.

truth be told, i would rather fix and reinforce stuff the hogs tear up then throw corn on the ground for the racoons and squirrels and wonder where the hogs are.

I use the 55 gallons Metal drum and drill about 30 holes with 1 inches dia around the drums, been for 2 years with out no problem.

I like pipes and digging holes with diesel corn cover up and let em work for it. Diesel makes it selective feeding no other animal will touch it and it does not hurt meat in any way.
I do not like jello moulasis etc.. less is more.

I did my pipe on that end using this cap.

how do make the cap stay on? is that the end you have the lanyard connect to? how do you fill your pipe?

any way, my redesign worked great. i rigged the tube/pipes up this morning and tonight my son (12) and i sat in the stand and waited. about 10ish a group of about 12 pigs from piglets to big sows and one big boar came into the feeder and feeder pipes. Note to self: move the feeder lights to shine over to see the feeder pipes better. we sat and watched the big boar throw the pipe about three feet into the air three times. everything stayed together so far.

anyway, it was my sons turn to make the shot and he missed (buck/boar fever i think) so we will let them settle down and try again next week.

i used a design from a great guy from another forum.

start with a piece of PVC pipe. i used 3 inch but going to make a couple out of 6 inch.

glue cap on one end of the pipe.

drill a hole every foot at 90 degrees from the other holes. 5/8" to 3/4" depending on what you put in it. the bigger the hole the easier it will for them to empty it. i have 3/4" holes but use sticky sweet feed.

on the end where you fill your tube. this is how i build mine first but i tightened the eye bolt down to the cap but had equipment failure. the other designer suggested leaving the eye bolt loose and using nylon nut to allow for a little swivel in the bolt. my new connection is working great so far. see beginning of the thread.

hook it to a post or earth anchor. adding swivels to the cable or chain will help with binding and kinking of the cable when the tube is pushed around and tossed in the air.

the cap is screwed in. the other designer put a little grease on his to make it easier to remove. i lightly buffed the thread on the cap and fitting for easy removal. all you need is snug and not over tighten unless you carry a tool to remove it with.

on my first build the cap just unscrews. the tube can be removed from the cap.

on my new design the cap still unscrews but there is a hole in the cap that the 1/8 inch where the cap can slide up and down the cable. the cable stays attached to the tube on the inside around the carriage bolt.

Re: they tried to steal my hog tube. - 06/09/11 12:18 PM

my first two tubes where made from leftover black sewer pipe when i was putting in my trail house. i was worried about the glue not sticking when using white pvc fittings and black pipe. i used TEK screws to help to hold the fittings on the ends of the pipes.

here is a picture of my tube. i had it as a trip for my hog trap at first before using it as a feeder. i think it is a little small and the hogs empty it pretty quick so that is why i am building a bigger one. you don't need the eye bolt on the sealed end. it was just to connect it in the trap. you could put it in and make a second tube to connect to it.

I put chain on my glued on cap and my filling cap is another and.
That there is no chance of unscrewing pipe.

X2 and inside I have a really chunky washer that is 3" in diameter and a 1/4" thick with a 5/8 hole.

as mentioned above, you have to have swivels at the connections, if you don't the chain will bind and the weakest link is the pvc

i am starting to like the putting the connection at the sealed end and i like the ideal of using a fender or chunky washer and came up with this ideal. if the cable goes through the cap on the sealed end then has a washer and a stop on the end then the cable can swivel in the hole in the tube.

kinda like this:

after looking at my picture i figured that the force of pulling or heavy pushing will transfer to the washer and the cap which i think have weak points. DavidK made this point which i am glad he did so it didn't make it look like i was starting a fight.

now i am thinking for my new tube is to go with the bolt through the pipe and a hole through the sealed cap so the cable force will be on the bolt and pipe and not the cap. add a swivel at the post. kinda like this:

i know, i am bored today. my ideal might not be the only way to build it but after seeing the big hog throw it around like a pencil then i might make it out of steel. i think someone said they use a barrel earlier in the thread.

Re: they tried to steal my hog tube. - 06/11/11 01:05 AM

went ahead and built a couple of new tube today. here is what i did:

put a hole in the center of the cap that would be glued on the pipe.

put the 1/8 inch cable through the cap and made a hoop. i put a bolt through the pipe and the hoop on the cable and then glued the cap on the pipe.

i glued the fitting that has the removalable cap to the other end of the pipe.

i measured down the pipe and drilled a 5/8 inch hole. i turned the pipe 90 degrees and drilled another 5/8 inch hole and moved on til i got four holes on all four sides. (picture if the pipe was square then there would be a hole on each side working your way down the pipe) i can always add more holes if needed but have found that less holes is better.

finally, on the end that goes over the T-post, i made a hoop of cable with a swivel. on the other side of the swivel i connected the cable coming from the pipe.

are you asking what kind of feed i put in my hog tube? i have been using a 50/50 mix of corn and sweet feed/ horse and mule. i also throw a hand full of rock that are just a touch bigger than the hole in the tube so if all the feed comes out then the hogs still think there is something in it.

have not been able to see your hog tube. work blocks photobucket pictures.
