I've got an Encore Pro Series in 22-250 that is a killer. Most of the yotes I've shot were with my Model 600 Rem in 6mm. A 70 grain hollow point bullet puts them down.

I use a .243. Same gun for preds, pigs, and deer. Most times it's surprisingly nice on fur. When it's not..well..it ain't pretty! LOL. It's a bolt action but I'm considering moving to semi-auto because every so often it would be nice to have a quicker recovery time for multiple targets.

I wouldn't get a bolt gun for predator hunting. get and ar15 in 204 or 223. Bolt gun you limit yourself if you miss, or have numerous animals. Ar you can stay in the scope and take numerous shots at one or multiple targets.

I bought my AR for just such occasions.

an AR in .223 would be better than .204, if (and or when) the SHTF, the .204 aint gonna do you much good and ammo wont be easy to find in quantities. for me the .22-250 is the best varmint range but even the .17hmr will work.

what brand handguard is on the bottom AR? that thing is awesome. looks like you cant mount a bipod tho can you?

It's a YHM rifle length FFT. Nope, can't mount a bipod...atleast not very well. The alluminum isn't really strong enough to support a sling swivel. I just use shooting sticks.

My fav is a Ruger #1 in 22-250

Recently been using a 17HMR and haven't missed or lost a varmint with it (longest shot was only 130 yards) plus there has been minimal pelt damage. Just bought my first Ruger that I'll be trying out this weekend (MKII VLE in 223). Also have a T/C ProHunter w/ a 204 bbl that will shoot <1" @ 300 yards but there's not much of a follow up shot with it. LOL I've had my 22-250 the longest (probably my favorite) and the 250 is hard to beat when it comes to ballistics. The AR platform is a hands down winner in the follow-up-shot category and everybody needs at least one AR so who knows. The 17 will have the least effective range (wouldn't shoot it much over 200 yards) but with the 204, 223, and 22-250 300-400 yards wouldn't be much of a challenge (as far as ballistics are concerned). Just pick the baddest lookin' critter getter that fits ya well and go kill something with it!!!

ditto for me on the Ruger #1 Varminter in .22-250. that .22-243 sounds like an interesting round....dont think I'll see that on the shelf at Walmart..

I don't feel comfortable recommending the .17HMR to anyone until I know more about there skill and experience level. It typically takes a caller with some experience to have the will power to take a pass when it's needed due to the limitations of the cartridge.

I agree on needing to know the 17's limitations. It definately has more limitations than other calibers listed.

I am a fan of bolt guns and worked with Savage to develop the Model 10 Predator Hunter. I prefer the .223 loaded with Winchester 50 grain Ballistic Silvertip bullets. The average shot on a called in predator is less than 100 yards so you don't need a lot of firepower. The secret to this game is and always will be is bullet placement.
My Model 10 shoots .3" groups with the Winchester 50 grain Ballistic Silvertip, Winchester 35 grain Ballistic Silvertips, 55 gr. Federal Premium and Black Hills loaded with Barnes 36 gr. Varmint Grenades. The point of impact will be different but the group size remain the same.
I don't see the need for firepower in this game so don't need the AR's but I am an old Dinosaur and resist change. Somehow,I manage to kill a critter every now and then.
