Suggestion on Hog Knife- What do you use? - 01/18/11 03:09 PM
Does anybody have insight on what i should look for in buying a knife to hunt hogs with? I have heard not all knives are created equally.
What length?
What type of Steel?
What Brand?

I use a kbar knockoff made by Frost. I believe the blade is 7 1/4 inches and it works fine. It's a cheap knife, doesn't hold an edge all that well but it doesn't have to either. I just run a smith's sharpener over it every other hunt or so to keep it sharp. If I lose it I won't shed too many tears because I can replace it cheap.
I'd say to look for a knife that:
six to ten inch blade give or take. not much under six but you don't need a sword
inexpensive
has a good handgaurd so your hand doesn't slip forward
has a good sheath. I hate a plastic sheath that rattles when i walk
Buck 119's, Kbar's, old bayonets, bowie style knives, are all popular. Uglydog Ranch sells some decent ones that don't cost much.

x2 I use a KBAR knock off from cheaper than dirt. It works great and is about 7 inches long.
