Kansas Pheasant Hunt???

Kansas Pheasant Hunt??? - 08/04/09 06:45 AM

I am looking for a place for my Father In Law and I to do some Pheasant hunting, I guess in Kansas, although it really doesn't matter to me where as long as there are birds and they are not caged.

My Father In Law has been good to me over many many years and I would like to do something for him to say thanks and he is an avid shot gunner. He very rarely hunts, mainly just shoots clays but talks of the good old days when they went on Pheasant hunts.

Two problems I have, I do not have dogs and I am on an extremely tight budget (not sure if I can even afford the cheapest of places). With those two things in mind does anyone have any suggestions of reputable or personal experiences?

Thanks

Jeremy,

Say we plan on coming up on a Friday, then hunting all day Saturday and departing early Sunday AM (6ish).

Does the $250 per day per person cover something like that? Also, would we have the opportunity to limit out assuming we can are good shots?

Shoot me a PM if you prefer.

Thanks

Don't underestimate the public land up there. There is tons of accessible land in SW Kansas that holds lots of birds. It may be a little tougher without dogs, but you never know. Just a low-budget idea.

I have done the walk in thing with out dogs with very little success. Those tracts of land get worked over pretty hard and with out good dogs and some experience on where to find birds it is a tough hunt.

TXFOUR,
Talk to the guys you are planning on hunting with about your timing on going up to do your hunt. The last couple of years it has been really hot the first few weeks of the season and rains have kept farmers from bringing in their crops. When that happens you get lots of birds that will just run on you and no way to push them out of the fields of milo which makes the hunting tough. It depends on the area you are going to, but be sure to ask your outfitter about the best times to come. AB

Watch out... pheasant hunting is addictive!! You may come back and want to start shopping for a dog! If you do look me up, I am in the bird dog business as well!

We are planning a trip up the week before Thanksgiving. Your more than welcome to tag along if you like. There will be two or three of us with dogs. We just go up and work the WIHA's. Most likely we will be in central to North central Kansas for this hunt. Your out of state Lsc is $72.00 and rooms are very reasonable. We won't be firming up our details until after we get back from
Montana in Sept. Let me know if your interested.

i know wiha's can be hit and miss, but personally i know NW kansas is going to have a good to great season. they moved the opener back to the second weekend in nov like it used to be, so there should be less uncut corn this year. they had an extremely wet spring, and it might be worth the drive up there.

I strongly recommend Greg Wyrick in Haviland, KS. Kiowa County is in the heart of quail country, and Greg has good property, dogs, accommodations, and feeds you as part of the program. It's not fancy, but if you're interested in birds, he's got 'em. His CRP is surrounded by irrigated crop circles, so the birds are pretty much always there, unless there is a really hard winter. I don't have his number, but he's in the book. Tell him "Howard sent you."
