The Wandering Wingshooter Podcast - 08/25/19 09:01 PM

A friend has talked me into starting a bird hunting podcast. It has been quite the adventure. Please go to The Wandering Wingshooter Podcast and give it a listen. Feel free to offer constructive criticisms or advice about future interview subjects.

Lots of quality footage on the video, nice work. Listened to Pyke interview, always interesting to hear about others hunting experiences and draw parallels to your own experiences etc.

Thank you DWQ. Episode 1 with John Mcgranaghan is my favorite so far. He talks about grouse and woodcock hunting in New Hampshire and really paints a vivid picture with his descriptions. It was a fun interview.

I've got three episodes up.

Episode 1 - John talks about hunting grouse and woodcock in New Hampshire.

Episode 2 - Weston talks about habitat development on public lands in the OK panhandle.

Episode 3 - Brent talks about hunting grouse and woodcock in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and how it compares to OK quail hunting.

Man has starting this podcast been a lot of work! But it has been fun. I'm getting a chance to talk to birdhunters from all over the country about the sport I love so much. This week's episode is a detective in Kansas City that takes his co-workers bird hunting on the awesome public lands available in Kansas. In future weeks I'll have a brain cancer survivor/birdhunter and a tattoo artist/upland artist telling their stories.

I've got interviews scheduled with a wildlife biologist who supervises scaled quail research and a man who has been hunting prairie birds in Montana and Oklahoma quail for 30+ years. I'm traveling to North Dakota next week to hunt sharptails and then to both Minnesota and Michigan to hunt ruffed grouse. I'll do podcast episodes from both hunts.

Give it a listen.

With the Oklahoma quail opener coming this Saturday I'd encourage all who might be interested to go and listen to Episodes 2, 9 and 13 of the podcast. Weston Storer, Dr. Dwayne Elmore and Alan Peoples each have a ton of knowledge about quail and quail hunting and their conversations are full of informative tips that will be interesting to quail hunters.

Which one of these episodes would be best for a new quail hunter? I have done plenty of bird hunting but not quail

All three really have some neat tips about how to be successful hunting quail. Weston talks a lot about habitat while Dr. Elmore and Alan Peoples discuss bird behaviors they've learned from being involved in scientific studies. As bird hunters they talk about how those behaviors should translate in hunting quail. Episode 12 with Ben Edinger might be helpful as well. He talks about learning to upland hunt and handle dogs as an adult.

I listened to episodes 2 and 13 today and really enjoyed them. I now want to make a trip up to Oklahoma this season. Thanks for sharing, I will definitely be listening to the rest.

Thanks Zack. I enjoy doing them particularly meeting the people whom I interview.

Oklahoma has great public land quail hunting. Packsaddle WMA and Black Kettle WMA should be within driving distance of New Braunfels for a weekend trip. The Beaver River WMA is my home WMA and it draws hunters from all over the US. Come give one of them a try!

Thanks for the positive feedback. I'm having a blast meeting bird hunters and talking with them about their adventures. I'll continue to try to improve the audio quality and find interesting content. I appreciate your listens.

I've had some people ask me about the podcast so I'm migrating the original 20 episodes to my YouTube account over the summer. I thought some on here might enjoy them.

I've thought about doing that. It would be fun to spend an hour talking with him about the changes in Texas quail hunting over his lifetime. He's such a treasure it seems a shame not to share him with other hunters.

He grew up in some prime quail hunting country and has spent a lot of years chasing them! I'd enjoy listening to an interview on bird hunting with him.
