Bird hunting videos - 10/07/18 03:06 PM

I've been wearing a GoPro while hunting for the last 3 years. I take lots of raw video and enjoy culling them down to the fun parts and editing them by adding music and titles. I then share them with friends. This sport I love is beautiful and artistic. I try to capture that as best I can. I'm not a professional (videographer or editor that is) and the videos take a LOT of time to put together.

I also have enjoyed meeting fellow hunters on some other boards. I'm going to Michigan this week to hunt grouse with 5 guys I met on a different board. They come and hunt with me periodically during the winter. I suspect we'll be lifelong friends.

I'll put a video up occasionally if you guys enjoy them. Let me know. If you want to punish yourself by watching all my stuff you can go to my YouTube page and watch.

Both. I hunt a fairly steady mix of private and state lands. I live 2 miles from a 25,000 acre WMA (Beaver River) where I worked as a teenager. There is some really good quail hunting there especially if you don't mind burning some boot leather. I also live in the small rural county where I grew up and know the majority of the landowners some of which are gracious enough to let me have access. Finally, I lease a small property and hunt other leased properties as a guest fairly frequently. I'm an equal opportunity kinda guy.

Here's a little public land action.

My old Vizsla, Rhett, has been a bird machine over the last ten years. Like me he's slowing down some but he's still murder on quail.

These are awesome! I think I have seen your stuff on Instagram too. Good luck in Michigan. I moved from Michigan to Texas 2.5 years ago. Everybody I know has been doing well. Woodcock are pretty hot in the northwest part of the lower peninsula right now.

Thats a sweet double there. Are those 30 in barrels?

Awesome video. I grew up hunting quail, pheasant, ducks and geese in Texas and OK panhandle. Man I miss it, especially after watching those videos. Good job!

PS: what video editing software do you use? I used a trial copy of Movavi editor and it worked pretty well. I think it was about $50 but I haven't purchased anything yet.

Thank you for your kind comments. I use the free editor provided by GoPro (Studio). It can be cumbersome but so far I've been able to do most of what I want with it. Most people don't realize how much computer time gets tied up in even a short video. Shooting the raw video is challenging but the editing is more so. I love to share this sport I love so the videos are fun for me.

Last one for the year.

By my count I moved 116 coveys in 30 days afield. 13 of those coveys were blue quail. I killed 40 quail in 86 attempts. I shot a limit of pheasant on January 4, 2019 and saw only one prairie chicken all year (January 21, 2019).

We'll see how next year compares.

I really like creating them and am glad you enjoy them enough to take the time to post your appreciation. I don't get much feedback from the people who are watching my videos and that makes it hard to know what they like and what they don't. Frankly, the absence of feedback at times makes me question whether I should bother posting my videos at all. I don't make them with any commercial purpose. They started as a way for me to share the sport I love with my family and friends. I found that some people here, and on other hunting boards, seemed to appreciate them.

You've noted your enjoyment after each of the videos I've posted. Please understand that your graciousness has been recognized and appreciated.

As I get older Kelulu this is about the only way I get to enjoy it anymore. Please don't stop posting them. The only way I could get to enjoy it again would be winning the lottery, buying my own ranch where i could ride an ATV instead of walking on these old wore out knees. Your videos put me right in the action. Thanks again!

A friend and I both took video of this flush from this weekend. It was a pair of Huns in North Dakota. As you will see we each miss with our first barrels then connect on the second.

Listen to us talk about it on my podcast, The Wandering Wingshooter, when the episode goes live this Sunday.

Re: Bird hunting videos - 10/15/19 01:42 AM

I hunted in the Ruffed Grouse Society National Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock hunt in Grand Rapids, MN this past week. The woods up there were beautiful and the people were super-friendly. I shot the clips that make up this video.

The big woods make capturing good video really tough. They also make wingshooting pretty damn tough. These clips turned out pretty decent. Watch them on a PC with your YouTube settings on 1080 and you can see the birds flushing in the slo-mo portions of the clips.

The Pyke Gear pants and shirt I wore while hunting this weekend stood up to the tough conditions in the woods. They are light and comfortable but really tough. I didn't shoot much better than I did in NoDak. I hope that's not how this seasons shooting is going to go for me. Frankly I didn't get many decent looks but I sure didn't capitalize on the ones I did get.

Raw, unedited video of a ruffed grouse flush in Michigan's Upper Peninsula that I captured last week. This is different than my regular videos in that it hasn't been edited. It is, hands down, the best grouse video I've ever captured. It has some mild NSFW language so don't turn it up too loud.

My buddy Brent Pike owns Pyke Gear and he's a great guy who occasionally makes an appearance in some of my videos. Go look at some of his upland gear if you get a chance. It's well thought out and made in the USA. I'm tough on gear and it has held up as well, or better, than most. Brent, and his company, are the kind of businesses that make this country work. If you need some upland clothing or gear give him a chance to supply it.

This is a pretty neat flush but you will need to make sure you watch it on a PC and turn your YouTube settings to HD (1080). I'd also urge you to turn up the volume a bit as these birds make a racket as they flush. Fun stuff!

Re: Bird hunting videos - 01/04/21 04:44 PM

A friend, Tom, has this beautiful English setter also named Ellie. She's super classy and also smart and cagey with the birds she finds, and she finds plenty!

The flush in this video is pretty neat. It's best viewed (as are most of my videos) on a PC with your YouTube settings on HD and the screen enlarged. I don't shoot in this video but sure could have taken a bird if I'd wanted to. I don't care how many times I see scenes like this but they always make my heart flutter.

Shot my 3rd banded bird, ever, Saturday.

Banded late summer by biologists from Oklahoma State University. One of only two bands reported thus far this season.

My first two banded birds were shot from a single covey in 2016. One on the rise and one as a follow-up single. I didn't realize either was banded until I returned to the truck and emptied my vest.

These are not from last season but the one before. I usually post a collection of my favorite clips after each season but failed to do so last year. I'll have the 20/21 clips up in a month or so depending on when I have time to devote to the editing. It's kinda strange though, the hunting was better in 19/20 but I got more and better video in 20/21.

I hope you enjoy these.

They are around. On a warm fall day a man needs to use some common sense about where he runs his dogs. We killed a big rattler two years ago the first week in December. I just avoid rocky, south-facing slopes and prairie dog towns in the early part of the season.

I used to vaccinate my dogs for rattlesnake bites but in the 20+ years I've been hunting quail I've never had (nor seen) a dog bitten so several years ago I decided it wasn't really that risky to do without the vaccine.

I just got back from a really awesome trip to Michigan for grouse/woodcock hunting. We hunted an archipelago in Northern Lake Michigan using boats to transport us, the dogs and our equipment. It was a strictly DIY hunt and required a lot of work and planning. The woods were still in full foliage so shooting was tough. Good video was really hard to get but I managed to get a few clips. Here's the first.

Such a wonderful day afield. Not a lot of birds but my dogs were primarily responsible for all the bird work we did get. Of the utmost importance was the fact that little Dot finally showed some signs of recovering from her health issues finding a covey after a hard run. I love hunting quail!

You can't see the bulk of the covey (sorry) but there were 12-15 total way back in some public land. Tough birds to find and even tougher to set. Ellie Mae is a quail goddess!

I'm pretty lucky. I work hard so the dogs and I can play a lot. That and a tolerant family and I get to spend a lot of time afield. I like sharing it with others of like mind.

"Gib sofort auf!!"

My part of the country was invaded by Germans (German dogs) this weekend. Despite all the sauerkraut and schnitzel they'd been eating they managed to find some birds bounce

Conditions have improved a bit and the dogs are starting to get those previously running coveys set. This video shows a super fun covey flush and a bit of poor shooting. I'm hoping to begin seeing more of the former and less of the latter as the season comes to a close.

I've been using a GoPro for the last 6 years and keep all my decent clips on my YouTube page. I share with my friends and like-minded folks on some bulletin boards. I wish I'd started earlier as I missed out on the chance to have videos of some of my previous dogs that are now gone. The dogs, the friends, the birds, the places will all eventually fade in my mind with age but I know now that I'll be able to go back and remember. Plus my children and their children will have the ability to see me doing something they will know I loved long after I'm gone.

I'm super glad you enjoyed my videos.

I haven't kept up with this thread like I have the last couple years. Anywho, to get you caught up the hunting is tough but there are birds to be found in exchange for shoe leather and sweat.

Thanks! That piece of equipment is a 1920 steam powered tractor displayed near one of the areas I sometimes hunt. It's got almost nothing to do with actual quail hunting but i like the color and texture of the rusting metal in juxtaposition with the colors of the quail.

I shot all 5 of these clips on the same wonderful day in January. My dogs actually found 6 coveys total but I failed to turn the camera on for one flush. I've posted all of them separately but wanted to have them together so I wouldn't forget they all happened on the same day.
