Killed a banded quail! - 02/19/17 05:11 PM

Spent a few days running dogs for a great group of guys just north of Noodle,TX this weekend and not only did we have a crazy good hunt, to top it off we killed a banded Bob. The ranch owner is going to get it mounted and put it in the ranch house. I'll post up some pictures of our hunt later we are on the road home now.

Re: Killed a banded quail! - 02/19/17 05:23 PM

I called and left a message at RPQRR. Haven't heard back yet. They have been shot up to 23 miles from there. This ranch is probably closer to 30 miles away, hopefully they'll call me back tomorrow.

The research ranch has done some trans-relocation but not sure if it's anywhere near you?

Based on the band that bird is definately from RPQRR or a release site. Let us know what they say.

Re: Killed a banded quail! - 02/20/17 02:58 PM

Update: just talked to Bradley at RPQRR and he said the bird was banded there in the Fall of 2015 and was a juvenile then. He said it was the furthest reported banded bird from the ranch. We beat the record by about 3 miles at 26.5 miles. Pretty much tops off one of the best weekends of hunting in my life so far. I meant to bring my camera to work and download pictures but forgot it. I will get some posted this evening or tomorrow morning.

They said most of the bands reported are from less than 5 miles. The record before this one was a little under 23 miles. Little sucker did some traveling!

Nice work!! You killed a mature bird. Late in the season.

You must be doing everything right. Congrats !

Re: Killed a banded quail! - 02/23/17 02:18 AM

I too am very surprised at the distance this bird traveled, especially with the good conditions of the past 2 years. If I'm correct, that's 2 birds confirmed traveling over 20 miles. Ii now suspect maybe this is more common that anyone previously believed. This is the sort of information that can only be obtained through good old fashioned (in the trenches) scientific research .

Great job and thank you for sharing this with the forum. Should you or anyone else shoot any other banded bobwhites and need to contact RPQRR, feel free to send me a PM and I can most likely assist.

Also and along the same line, here is another bit of recent data that some of you may find interesting:

Really easy. When you hit reply, the 2nd icon box fromthe top left in the reply box is for links to websites. You just paste the website in the box that pops up and hit okay, Then you can type the name of it and hit okay again and you are all set.

Quailg did this happen on Sunday morning by chance?

Re: Killed a banded quail! - 02/28/17 11:16 PM

It happened on 2/25 and it had a red ban(A&M)#11559.
Probably from Dale Rollins research.

Wow did yall see the map of origen of Matador visitors. That is amazing. We had Alaskans and hawians here to hunt quail. Just amazing. Said that over 10 thousand quail were harvested out there. Almost amazing as a quail that traveled almost 30miles. I'm guessing he was looking for longer legged women.
