Essence of the Hunt

Essence of the Hunt - 09/17/14 08:46 PM

Just ran across this again while rustling thru a pile of papers. Tess was my 2nd pointer. She showed me how to hunt. She had the lightest step of any pointer I've had.

My pointer Tess moves along spritelike in her graceful, effortless manner.
Probing the brush carefully, silent....rushing thru the open areas
and turning to check on me.
I trudge heavily along behind
Trying to keep up.
Then, the intensity of her point quickens my pace
And lightens my feet and my heart,

Awesome! Brings a big smile to my face and a visit back in time. Words can not describe the vision.

No, I think I'll hold off on that. Didn't say she was my best.

She did almost float over the ground. My wife, who is not a dog person at all, once remarked while Tess was covering a field, "She almost looks like she is flying". Her gait was that smooth and easy.

She was tough as nails, and a hard hunter. I've seen her belly ripped open by barbed wire when she was "baggy" after having pups, and cry to be put back on the ground after I picked her up to prevent further damage.

But she was also a hardhead, and could be a little hardmouthed at times.

So, I think its best to leave well enough alone. If I were inclined to write more, it would probably be about
another dog. That was written in '99. Since, I've had better.

Good stuff, but it sounds like you've had a few dogs that deserve a line or two themselves.

Thank you for your kindness, and I would write about them, but I only wax poetic or "prosey" once in a very great while.

If there is anyone here interested and who hasn't read it, I may trot out my story about PeeWee in the south Texas brush again someday.

Yes—both descriptive and very evocative. It's very nice to see on the Forum.

Essence of the Hunt

My pointer, Tess, moves along spritelike in her graceful, effortless manner,
Probing the brush carefully . . . silent . . .
Rushing thru the open areas,
And turning to check on me.
I trudge heavily along behind,
Trying to keep up.
Then, the intensity of her point quickens my pace
And lightens my feet and my heart.
