I shot quite a few preserve birds in the past. I quickly developed a preference for shooting scratch birds that had been released for a while. A bird just released can sometimes be easy birds that have been out there a week never are. A lot also depends on the strain of bird released some are extremely wary some might as well be chickens.
We will be on live birds in SD this year. We've hunted wild and released birds in Kansas the past few years due to the poor conditions. We also bought about 100 pheasants last year to work the dogs on. Those things were wild as heck! Some hit the ground running never to be seen again. Nothing like watching a $12 bird gaining altitude while leaving the county.
Now, our Johnny House quail are a different story. Once they live in there for a week or two, they lose the flight instinct.
