Bird dogs and livestock

Most bird dogs get over it, but it takes some awhile to get acquainted with livestock. Last weekend we had points on calves two days. I think it was the same calf. Cute little sucker! I've seen pups get spooked by cattle. I've seen them back cows. What has been your experience in this area?

My dogs are around them pretty often at Fort Hood so they don't pay them to much mind.

I had a Riggins white knight bitch that would back a calf on sight; was the most natural backing dog I ever saw.

cows mess us up...my dog points them and growls...we can be working into the wind and she'll act like she's on to birds and then we bust into a clearing and there's the herd.

fortunately quail country doesn't support many cows per acre...or maybe better phrased, requires a lot of acres per cow.

My experience is after a full dose of the e-collar they pay no mind.

One of the first no no's my dogs learn after collar conditioning...

My dog's response varies from chasing them to pointing calves in the grass to ignoing them. We are working on making the latter response the standard one. ET1

I treat livestock the same way I treat deer/hogs/snakes, etc... When a pup gives chase, i don't say a word, i just light them up. After once or twice the dogs don't pay them any mind at all.

Do you guys light them up just for pointing livestock?

They learn to leave em alone after a couple of encounters. Last year there was a bunch of young cows in one particular pasture that would follow us till we got into some trees or a creek bottom & a couple of them where a little bit mean, one of them got after Bleu & I had to fire a shot in the air to get it to leave him alone. Don't know what the deal was with those cows but they were mean.

No big issues with cattle or calves to date, but have a couple I wouldn't want to put around a goat or sheep. Have brought me several little pigs. Just a matter of time until something bad happens with the pigs.

First season my dog would bother the cows and even chased a couple of horses. One horse almost kicked him in the noggin. He pays them no mind now.

Now deer, I still have to be careful with them. I've had to light him up for chasing them a couple of times.

Never saw dogs mess with cows. I seen it the other way around and have seen cows try to tramp a dog.

can't afford not to, dog puts a horse or cow through the fence and it gets $$$$$ in a hurry.

I'm happy to hear someone has quail, hope you fellows are in Texas.

Probably had a baby calf stashed away in the cover. Even the gentlest mother cow can get pretty defensive with a newborn.

I make a point of walking my pups thru livestock. They learn that I am not interested in the least, and they shouldn't be either. Other than an occasional point from a certain little female I didn't aquire until she was well past a year old, I never have a problem.

Right on the money....espesialy heifers and brahman influinced cattle....you dont go in the same trap as a bramer heifer that just dropped her first calf..

OK. A bunch of young yearlings. At that stage of life they are the dreaded "teenagers", full of curiosity, playfulness, and not much sense. They will chase anything, chew on anything, etc. I remember watching one fight a plastic bag all across a field. My side hurt from laughing. Hunters, dogs, and plastic bags are fair game at that age.

I dont know how many chairs..panels..etc iv had to pull off a yearlins head....they are curious little buggers

I might have been wrong, but I figured one of them little suckers would be cheaper to replace than Bleu, so I only planned to fire one warning shot, if it hadn't of backed off when it did, I was fixing to be buying a cow / yearling.

You wouldnt hav to hit them just a warning shot would do

i have hog dogs an if my dogs give more than a glance at live stock , or deer , or off game they will get shocked , my pit catch dog is prolly the best of them all he will not even look at a horse or cow or goat he will turn his back to them or run away from them if they follow him

I have one that points cattle and will stop to flush on a pig, pretty nice style on a pig. And I have one that ignors cattle chases pigs and catches piglets, She has been hit by Thomas Edison but still chases and I worry about her. I have two that are young and stupid so we'll see how they react.
