Fulvous/black belly/mexican/tree whistlers... - 11/18/09 08:08 PM

I have a private spot near the Brazos that gets COVERED in teal, woodies, gads with other kickers later in the season. I've been scouting it once a wk to see if they are there yet (nope). So Mon afternoon I was out there and glassing the area and there were a buttload of these things there. They are usually all in the field behind my house (not huntable) by the thousands but not this year. Now I know where they went. I've never shot one, or had the urge to. Do they eat good? I know they fly real slow and are pretty dumb (they circle me if I walk out behind my house and stir them up) so I imagine they wouldnt be too hard to hunt. Anyone like hunting them?

I've heard they're very good, and as big as they are I assume they've got a lot of meat.

i have never shot one before so i don't know how they would taste, but they look like they would make a pretty mount

I shot a limit of them 2 years ago. They breast out like a Mallard and taste about the same.

hmm, maybe I should get after it then. The best partS about this place are: Private (family owned), between my house and my shop, the hunt is usually over by 7:30 AM.

Oh yeah and I only work 10 min away from my house!!!

Mid-week morning hunt before work? I think so!!!

I was going to wait until the good birds start coming in but this'd prob be some good practice for the pup and a good way to hold me over during the wk!

If you need someone to get rid of them let me know.

They eat fine. I like to hunt them when the other ducks arent hittin it bc you dont have to worry about setting out dekes...just set up on em and pass shoot.

Sounds like you need to go shoot a limit!

Do they fall into the "everything else" category for the limit? I.e. shoot 6 of em?

Awesome. We had a bunch nest on our lease in SE arkansas one year, but never around during season. Everything from mexico is expanding their range! Dillo's, whistling ducks, etc. stir
