Teal Hunting Questions

I believe that Blaze would probably kick Cesar and Cleo's a$$es. They have never been duck hunting before. I have taken them quail hunting and Cleo has her junior hunter title. She also has some training and is steady to flush. Caesar on the other hand, does not have any real hunting expearience but he is in obedience training with my wife.

They are really her dogs and she has finished thier conformation title(Champion) on both, the both have a CGC (canine good citizen) title and Cleo has competed in many agility competitions. They are both also registered therapy dogs and my wife takes them to work with her (she works in pediatric physical therapy and the kids love them).

As for pure sporting (from the pictures of Blaze that I have seen) Blaze would win hands down.

I have no doubt that I could get them to retreive ducks Cleo is a great swimmer and does laps in the pool for fun. She love to retrieve balls and sticks and all other types of items that we throw in the pool or lake. The only problem would be keeping her from swimming around while we are waiting for ducks. She just loves the water.

With the recent addition to the family (11 months now) and another on the way, I have had a lot of constraints put on my personal time. I may try and get Caesar going on retrieving if I start to get into duck hunting. I have never been and this will be the first year I try it so we shall see.

Vs do make excellent therapy dogs. They are some of the smartest dogs that I have even been in contact with and they seem to know what each patient needs to make them smile. They are very gentle with the little ones.

Thanks for the info on the teal as well, I will check some of the wet creeks and larger tanks during early dove season and see if I find any.

Once the day arrives I take some steel loads w me and go jump shoot the tanks at the dove lease at first light..We have 3 tanks and most of the time they are holding 20 to 30 birds..fun before the dove start flying..not hard to get a quick limit...they will usually buzz the tank again once they have got off the water...good luck..

I have shot teal in Graham in the early season. If you are closer to Lake Graham, you should be better then where we go. We get a few, not a whole lot, but later in the season, we have tons of teal of course we pass them for mallards.

They got some rain, big rain back in late June...and I think the 3 inches will help, but they will need more.

I have hunted them on large lakes, put the time in to scout them and hunted them during the week. However, I cheated...I had access to small private places near larege public lakes and on weekends I would go there and let the big lake hunters run birds to me. It was always fun, usually two people could limit easily, three might be a stretch most times, but we did it.

Thanks for the info Bradbury. I am about 5 miles from the lake as the crow flies so that may not work out too well for me. We do have quite a bit of water on our place, but nothing that you would call a lake. We have big pond and about 7 or eight small ones.

I have read that putting out mallard decoys can help attract teal. I have access to about 30 decoys. Should I put them out?

I have about 4 dozen teal tecoys and have yet to get them all wet at the same time. LOL....I mix some in with my big duck spreads...but I have shot teal over mallard decoys in the early season, but I just put mallard hens out.
