Boat blind project!

Boat blind project! - 09/23/18 03:59 PM

Hey guys! I’m not a big fan of big blinds as I prefer to use my boat or canoe to just get there and then hunt by sitting or standing in brush or timber! Although I’ve been wanting to take my 6 yr old twin boys hunting with me. I think a boat blind will be my best bet for the moment considering most areas I hunt would be neck deep on them! I started my project a few days ago and have the frame just about complete! I wanted something inexpensive that would be adjustable in height, quick and easy to set up, and stows taking up minimal space! I plan to add an overhead roof as well but haven’t completely decided on if I’m going to make it hinge back over the top or just slide into a fixed tube!

So far I have about 33 bucks in steel plus some c clamps and some nuts and bolts from my coffee can.

My question for you guys is what material would you use for the backing under the camo netting and grass materials. I know the boat isn’t camo but the blind will totally cover it. I would like it to be waterproof and wind proof so I can keep the rain off of us. My first thoughts was a tarp but this seems bulky and they all seem crisp and noisy. My second was nylon Ripstop tent material, but it’s pretty pricey. Any ideas that any of you have used with success?

I’m able to because I have drop box. I imagine most people here don’t have drop box.

tarp will work fine
exactly what I used for the backing to break the wind

middle picture shows close up of hinge used to do overhead, attaching the tarp and camo to lid, controlled how far over it swung.
and for traveling it all lay flat, used small bungees to roll up and contain camo
one man setup, easier of course with 2

Awesome, yeah I think I’ll go the tarp route. Cheaper sounds better at this point.

Thanks for the pictures of the hinge. I’ll see if I can incorporate something like it in my design!

Anyone have any preference for grassing it up? I’ve looked at rafia grass and Avery killer weed. Plus I have a field full of native grasses I can cut and use but not sure how that will hold up. The areas I normally hunt tend to be willows.
