Lost by best friend

Lost by best friend - 10/15/14 04:07 AM

Yesterday was one of the hardest days of my life. I made the decision to put my best friend down after 9 plus years. She was diagnosed with lymphoma sarcoma on July 2nd 2014 and was only given 30-50 days to live and made it 104. The plan was to let everyone say their goodbyes and then take her in today at 10:30, but she didn’t make it through the night.
Toby has been the greatest dog a person could ask for. While at home she just wanted to hang out with you and do whatever you were doing. She didn't care when my niece or nephew were pulling on her tail or stealing her toys she just loves to be around everyone. But she is not just a house dog; she is my favorite hunting buddy. It didn't matter what situation I put her in, it could be 110 outside chasing doves or standing in frozen water she was right by my side waiting and willing to fetch whatever hit the water.
One of the hardest things is knowing that my five month son will not have the chance to get to know the dog that has loved him, licked him and tried to give him her toys when he is crying. Toby you will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

Re: Lost by best friend - 10/15/14 01:21 PM

The kids in my class are asking why there are tears streaming down my face.

Man, what a beautiful epitaph all we can really hope for in this life is that when we leave we will have been loved and will be missed. Your buddy hits the nail on both counts. I am so sorry for your loss. I am poorer for never having had the opportunity to hunt with such an awesome partner. Hang in there amigo, I know it is hard but God must have needed some ducks fetched up in Heaven. You will see your pal again. You will be in my prayers.

What a sad day for you. I know that feeling. When I had to put mine down at 14 years old I cried and sobbed my eyes out like a blubbering baby.

There are some folks who will wonder why we get so attached to a dog that when we lose one we cry like they were a family member. Well! They were. If you don't understand, I feel sorry for you.
Condolences

Sorry for your loss. It's so tough losing a family member that never got mad at you and always wanted to please you and give you unconditional love. RIP Toby.

Good thing she found a lost bird to complete the limit once her owner couldn't count.

Sorry...this sucks. Momma's house dog got that stuff last April and made it 3 months. We saw specialists and everything and the bottom line was always the same. It's nasty and sorry Toby and you had to deal with it.

We duck hunters love our dogs. We form a special bond with them that most people never know. Never gets any easier. The time we have with them is priceless.

Re: Lost by best friend - 10/16/14 01:06 AM

Very sorry to hear that, and very sorry for your loss. That's tough...you're in our thoughts and prayers. I like the thought mentioned above, that God had some ducks he needed retrieved. She's a Lab, remember the great retrieves and hunts for sure, but don't forget the moments of pure goofiness she surely showed you. They'll make you laugh through your tears, I'm sure. I wish you all the best and, again, we're so sorry for your loss.

Yes I agree it is hard and we all know we will share the same common pain as well when its our turn...but then we know that the very day we bring the pups home and into our lives and families too....its worth it,is it not...I've oft said G-d was gonna add a few more angels to his line up ,but decide to make dogs instead! angel

Evan, Toby was a good one, I enjoyed hunting with her. I am sorry for your loss.

As you know Rowdy passed January 1, this year at the age of 14 and it's still not easy. He still rides in the truck with me every day.

Who knows maybe Rowdy and her are sitting on the river bank at the waters edge, enjoying the sunrise.

God Bless.
