Goose call purchasing suggestions

Goose call purchasing suggestions - 08/05/14 12:36 PM

I am an avid duck hunter of close to 20 years however I have never had a need for a goose call. I consider myself average on a duck call. I am looking for suggestions on a decent goose call to add to my lanyard? Thanks in advance for your input!

What kind of goose are you looking to call in?

I only have limited knowledge with Zink goose calls, but I like them quite a bit. My brother has a NOS, and I have a COD. As far as I know, a lot of people tend to like them. There are of course other good brands

Canadians but will probably have a bunch of snows in the area as well.

ZINK money maker would be a great one to add to your lanyard the only bad part is i think it cost $150

I keep a buck Gardner Canada hammer 2 on my lanyard for resident Canada during teal season. It's about 20, easy to learn and worked for me last year to call in a single that flew by.

Also new to goose calling and I'm considering the Tim Grounds SuperMag at Cabelas for $59.

Any reviews on this call? Good for a beginner?

I like the power clucker by zink... at 20$ its by far the cheapest call on my lanyard but its not always about cost... That thing gets down and dirty, is easy for a beginner or intermediate, and we killed our fair share of honkers with it last season!

I'm a fan of the Texas made Cuttdown Calls. Either the poly or the acrylic, not the wood. The Loudmouth poly has done me well for several years. I currently use the acrylic/hedge patriot that I altered the chamber interior to the shape of the former. The owner of this company will sometimes have some good deals on ebay.

I like the high end Tim Grounds calls I have tried, but I am not a rich man. I recommend them if money is no option. If you only are wanting something for the occasional bonus resident Canadas, a flute call like a Big River can't go wrong. Easy to master without much practice and has a good deep sound the bigger geese like. I have come to like an antique Lohman flute call on my lanyard for the purpose. But your serious go to call should be a short reed. If your budget is low, the hammer II recommended is not a bad call. I bring a couple for guests to use on my hunts and the Quackhead is not a bad call either for no more than it costs.

Until I absolutely nail down making my own spec call, I will be using the Quackhead free promotional call I got a couple years ago. It is a plastic cheap POS but it sounds great and runs easy.

Zink - COD - Call of Death, is a GREAT upper end call

Zink - Power Clucker - is a GREAT low end call

I have both and they do the job!

Thanks,

Here are a few pictures from last year:

Used a NBN - Naughty By Nature and a COD - Call of Death

First pic is of Kelly's group and second was my group.

Used Zink calls to bring them in.

Oh, and since a few are bringing it up there is a few goose calling trophies up on my wall also... up

I didn't know you had any state championships in goose calling. Congrats up did you go to Easton Maryland? I'll ask the Maryland state champ if he knows you since I'm fishing in a tournament with him in Ocean city. I'm sure he knows you

Thanks for all the input! Love the pictures too! It looks like zink has a good following and I may go that route in the near future. I currently run RNT daisy cutter duck calls and found an RNT hunters series on clearance at the local Academy for $39 so I figuered I would give it a try. Thanks agian for the suggestions!

Well if some of these guys could rate an RNT Prostaff gig they would have all told you to go that route in the first place.

Better than the last couple if years. Quite a bit of milo to.

Not to mention the dove hunting should be terrific. We have over 8500 acres of sunflowers.

Nice! I miss seeing the crane beatdown pics, they were pretty epic! Btw, I'm not going to that contest if Eric guigenheim (probably butchered the name, sorry) is, that dude strait up put me in my place last time I was on stage with him.

Re: Goose call purchasing suggestions - 08/07/14 01:37 PM

Every call is different. All of the big guys make quality stuff. Personally I would get something easy to blow that doesn't take a ton of air to learn on. Saunders traffic, Gk Canuck, RNT micro goose, grounds overhauler.

These are calls that anybody that practices can develop proper techniques with out requiring huge amts of air.

Seriously though. ...I think the Rangercreek crew has to be the most knowledgeable when it comes to Geese in Texas and thats no secret.

Erik and Derek are two of the best Goose Callers I have ever heard.

Derek has tuned a couple of my calls before. (only one I have ever let tune my Canada calls besides myself)

As for the contests I have placed 2nd behind Derek and Erik.

Which is fine with me.

Like Justin said, there is plenty of good quality calls out there, try them out see what you like.

Most of the time you will get what you pay for.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

I like Tim Grounds as well. Have had rnt and zinc which are also great calls and kill birds. I prefer Tim Grounds. You got some good calls to choose from nowadays. Call makers have really got it together now.
