Can't beat Rio Shells. Usually 6-8 bucks a box. That's what I shoot. I love em. Cheap in price and can hold up a solid pattern

Re: Shotgun shells - 07/20/14 06:06 PM

I bought the last case of 12 gauge that they had. They still had a lot of the 100 round packs for $20. They also had 20 gauge on sale.

I stopped reloading a few years back with Academy ran shells for $2.99 a box and I was costing me $2.50 a box to reload AAs...Looks like I need to get out the old MEC.

Dick's sporting goods has a lot of shells for 20% off. I got me 2 cases of Winchester AA (black box). Came out to $69.28 a case.

Forgot to mention $2 rebate per box. So it comes out a lot cheaper.

Rio Game Loads are $5.49 a box or $54.90 a case, high brass and extremely easy to reload later down the road.

That was me to the "T". They sucked me in for a couple years and almost got me to sell my reloader. HA! Still got it and about to get it cranking!

David, where are you finding Rios for $54.90 a case? Cabela's right now wants $69.95 and Academy wants $59.95.

Re: Shotgun shells - 07/21/14 05:23 PM

I think Gander Mt have some sort of rebate thing going on with the Rios that put them at mid $50's (College Station). They also had Federals at $59.95. I am still waiting for similar deals in Winchester Super X (sentimental reasons, my father swears by them, so I oblige, they do go bang and drop birds if I do my part).

I was the same way until shot prices went through the roof. Factory loads are still cheaper.

Re: Shotgun shells - 07/21/14 06:14 PM

Academy has Rio game loads for $5.49.
Good shell, a little heavy.

Hard to beat hand loads. Paying $27 for shot right now.
Not bad. Loading 28 gauge for about 4.50.
These days powder is the tough part. Hard to find and I had to pay $18.75 a pound for Green Dot last month.

Re: Shotgun shells - 07/24/14 12:34 AM

I reloaded a flat a few weekends ago. I think I'm good. Right at 3 bucks a box to reload I think is what I figured when I bought components.

What part of DFW are you finding the case for $40 at Walmart. I have only seen the 100 value packs at walmart. I stay in Lewisville.

Well, if 100 shell packs are $19.95, then (2)100 shell packs would be $39.90. There's 250 in a case.

I don't like the way the cheap ones from Walmart shoot in my 11-87. I like the Remington Shurshot Heavy Dove. They shoot for me as good as higher priced loads and they're not overly expensive @ Academy, $6.79 a box. I got a flat in #7 1/2 and will probably get some in #6, just because I want to experiment with #6 this year. I have a bunch of other shells, but these work the best for me at the price point I need for the 500-700 rounds I'll shoot. Don't get me wrong, I've killed a bunch of dove with the cheap ones from walmart, but I get better performance out of these remingtons so it's well worth the extra $10-15 a case.

If you're after the Rio's at the Academy at LBJ & MCArthur (just west of there) you might call first. Elm Fork has been buying them out and selling them at the range for $8-9 a box.

Most definitely came here to comment on shells, seems its drifted far from the subject title......Walmart 100 count shells for sure. Remington, Federal, or Winchester. My hotrodded 870 prefers the Remington loads in #8's............Haven't priced them lately but they were around 20 to 25 bucks for a box......need to go get a couple of boxes and head for the clays range in Paris....
