I wanted a speck for the wall... - 12/19/13 04:08 AM
...and Third Coast Outfitters obliged. We met the guys at Whataburger in Bay City about 4:00 this morning and headed out about 5:00. Dead calm a low fog and a full moon make for an eerie morning while setting up the socks. We got the socks out and the holes dug well before daylight and spent time in valuable conversation about various political figures, how awesome the Cowboys are at sucking at life, and solved several major issues in the Middle East... At daylight the fog was dense but very low and the lack of wind did not have us overly optimistic. The socks just twitched every now and then with a light breeze. Birds started moving and right out of the box a flock of about 50 Ross geese was fooled. They came whiffling furiously through the fog...the shot was called...HeviMetal flew...and so did all but two geese. After that we had a big group of snows give us a look and decide against us and move on only to light 100 yards away just out of visible range in the fog. Well they made better decoys than the socks and several small groups of specks joined them. After more geese passed us up for them I got out of my hole and walked over to jump them off the X and get them back in the game. As I walked through the fog more geese were funneling in. Two very speckled specks buzzed me and having never killed one I could not refrain...I picked the one with the most decoration and plugged him. I coulda gone home then...I was tickled to death....but we didn't. Had a good shoot over the next couple of hours. Wind didn't do us any favors but the fog was our friend. I had no desire to spend money getting a snow mounted but killed two that were massive birds...I had to bring them home. Killed a pair of blues as well but I wanted one that was colored up just right and I have to have an excuse to go back! Great hunt. Good guys. Even met the friendly man in the green truck. He was very pleasant to deal with. Can't wait to go back.
