problems with cows

Do any of you guys ever hunt pastures/fields for geese when cows are present? If so- how do you keep em out of your decoys? The properties I hunt always have cattle, and the only time they see people in the fields is when they are getting fed, so they follow me to where ever I set up, and then get curious about the decoys. This year I started walking out in the field to get them used to someone out there without getting fed, but I dont think it is working.

Short of chasing them away every 5 minutes, got any suggestions?

Shoot the cows and have steaks lol a lot more meat on them cows as opposed to a goose haha

I would just let them walk around...maybe could be confidence decoys? i dont hunt fields though so i wouldnt know haha

A bag or two of range cubes will keep them occupied.

Yeah bag of cubes would help out. Or just bust off a couple shots and they'll go away, thats what I do.

I have the same problem turkey hunting. I stayed still and quiet until a cow started chewing the fan on my tom decoy.

Usually after 10 minutes or so they leave.

Steak em

I hunted around quite a few cattle this year. Most of them were currious and would get quite close. However birds would land in the pond with a cow at the other end not 100 yds away. As soon as a shot went off the cows would move out.

Our cows are used to shots. I'll sometimes have the dogs run them off.

Yep I gotta feed horses on my lease if I ever what any privacy.

I just have to wait on em...been hunters around them so often they didn't bother me but I couldn't run em off either...

Thanks Guys. I obviously cant shoot em, then I'd lose my permission. But they are cows that are calving, so perhaps veal for dinner?HAHA

I will ask the farmer if I can toss same hay in a corner, but because there are nosy and curious calves, might not work, but worth a shot. I used to do it when it was just the cows, and it worked for half of em, so i'll try it again.

They will get bored and move on. You could take a bag of range cubes and start feeding them somewhere else when you go.

Good luck...they are curious and will tear up anything so I think you just have to be careful not to shoot one and make the owner ticked off.

I hunt with cows around tanks and fields everywhere I hunt. I tell my clients not to run them off because the ducks and geese are use to them. They will eventually get tired of the shooting and move on. Horses are a differnt story. They just plain freak out. I think the range cube idea is great if you want them somewhere else but the birds are use to seeing them. Also a bb gun works if they cant leave the decoys alone.

I had a cow try to retrieve a duck one time.

I had some cows munch some cork decoys once, now I cover everything with hog panels to keep them out. It is nice to have them around though. BB gun is a good idea.

Our place in Oklahoma has some wheat fields that load up with Geese & the cows are just walking around amongst the Geese, we want to get a cow outfit & just walk into the flock grabbing them one at a time. I told my buddy I was game, as long I am the head portion of the suit.

I hate to admit this but the lease that we had in the late 1990s in S Central NV was on a working cattle ranch. Trying to keep them out of the decoys and away from the permanent blinds was a job and a half. It finally dawned on me that a pump-up BB gun might just do the trick. It did. And wifey person decided that was almost more fun than waiting for the ducks to decoy into our pond. She claimed the full time job of cattle-plinker with that BB gun and she got to a point where she could hit them at some unbelieveable distances. Took her awhile to accept the fact that she needed an 8-10 foot hold over a cow at 100 yards, depending on wind that day. It was also good practice for her to learn how to lead out in front of a moving target ... especially after they were "bit" in the rear on the first shot.

We have the same hassle on the wheat/rye we hunt in Oklahoma, run them off and they come right back but generally after 2-3 times they leave. Next year I'm gonna take my paint ball gun.
