Species Clarification - 11/22/11 04:08 AM

This post is in response to one on the tourney. mnsherick, nothin against ya, but that hen is buggin me. cheers The bird on the far right is a pintail hen.

I can see how the head coloration could be confused but look at the feathers on the back and chest. Hens can be a pain to i.d. but you don't want to have too many pintail hens on your strap when the green truck pulls up and the mud is too hard for a stomp. bolt JUST KIDDING!!

And for those that think it's a mallard hen hammer It's not. cheers

Thanks Guy for explaining the rules, my original thread should have had evidence proving the bird is a pintail. Yall take it easy, I gotta get up and get myself stuck in knee deep mud again tomorrow. cheers

the bird in the far right of the first picture is a pintail hen no doubt...look at the bill color and the feathers on it's body...they look nothing like a gadwall drake

kdub, Let it keep buggin ya bro!

No doubt it was the first pintail hen I've shot with clear brown/black/white pacthes on the wings. ( I thought juvi gadwall drake)

No pics to back it up since the trash had been taken out when I got home that day.

I've shot plently of pintails, and gadwalls so I would think I got it right. I'm in no way too prideful to admit a mistake, but I know what I saw and I'm sticking with it since I don't have those wings.

There is NO CHANCE that is a Gadwall Drake.

The gaddy juvi drake bill is orange/black, versus hen pintail is blue and black, below is a good pic of that.

Pintail Hen

Look at the chest feathers, the Gadwall drake has a much finer mosaic pattern than a pintail hen. Look at the back feathers, the Gadwall drakes tuen a solid color half way back then pintail hen is mottled the whole way.

Yeah, I think I'm with Garret on this, the bill looks very black, and the neck does not look long enough to be a pintail...

By all means keep the thread going fellas I'm getting a kick out of it.

To address the "guide" question.

This must really be bothering "birddog14" (please stop PMing me, my inbox is getting full) I find it all kind of funny.

I rarely "guide" hunts most are for pigs or deer, not ducks. I do "take" a lot of friends and family out duck hunting on occasion. We usually shoot limits of pintail hens, and coots.

My business is the "day hunts" for deer, pigs, and ducks. We manage several properties in various central/north central texas counties. We also trap pigs, and offer "guided" pig hunts during the summer in east texas.

One last thing and I'm done;

My name is on every post it's "Matt" Also my web address and Phone # are in multiple locations, I'm not some jerk hiding behind a screen name. If it's really bothering you so much give me a call, I'm really a great guy.

This is what the issue is 1000%

You have hunt prices in you sig..one is ducks..and not even a cheap duck hunt at that!!!!

Therefore you are telling the general public, long term hunter or newbie your an expert, b/c you guide.

Let's make a note...

Being a duck over via species will probably have more finanical ramifications then shooting a less then 13 in deer in a AR county...which is basically the same thing..your the guide and your sitting with a client you would you let him shoot a a 12" spread deer or call him off???

As a guide you are the expert, you are the responsable party.

And your joking about it is very troubling..very

If you where a regular Joe..you would caught a little hell on here but its a good lesson..everybody makes mistakes...but your not a regular Joe your a guide

First you sink your boat!!!!!!!! then you call a 2 limit duck a 6 limit duck..

I don't give a hoot how good you call, how many ducks you kill, or if you pull limits every day...fact is you advertise your self as a guide.. guides job is to safely take care of their clients.. so far your not showing a good history and on a public forum none the less.. and then try to dismiss it as nothing.

And to anyone else that just started guiding please take note.

So now we get to the bottom of it.

I hunt from the same boat for 5 years in all kinds of weather, and number of hunters. I get blow over by the wind (25+mph not to mention gusts) and now I'm an idoit, great call.

You got, accidents DON'T exist and I must be an idiot.

Also just to set the record straight we have never sold a single duck hunt all the properties we purchased and leased back in jan/feb are completely dry from this years drought.

We have been selling deer/pig hunts for 4-5 years but just aquired the properties for ducks.

Call me a guide, call me an average joe, doesn't matter to me. I'm just a guy that loves to hunt ducks, deer, pigs, geese, cranes, pheasants, & quail. I also love to see people get out on a "first time" hunt with a daughter or a son. We don't break even on our hunts and don't intend to anytime soon, this "business" isn't so we can stack up a pile of money. It's stritctly for our enjoyment, keeps me, my dad, and most importantly my grandpa (80) busy active and outdoors.

Sure beats the heck out of the best day at REAL work!!

So lets make a note;

Now that you know who I am, try a personal attack that actually fits.

WE had a blast, shot 12 birds mostly gadwall, a few teal, 1 widgeon, and 1 mallard.

First I didn't call you an idiot for swamping your boat...you laughed off a correction on a two limit duck..and I found that disturbing as your Sig fancies your self as a duck guide, I also remembered you swamping your boat but didn't realize your a guide at the time.

And yes accidents do exist..but not when your a guide..they are called at fault liabilities.

But now that you brought that up...

You went hunting in 25mpgh wind plus in a 15 flat bottom..on one of the roughest lakes in North Texas and got swamped in open water? seriously?

Once again, your so great at the assumption game. For your info the weather forecast looked like this.

2-4mph SSE wind 2am-5am
5-7mph ESE wind 6am-noon

What happen was very different, but being the all knowing god of ducks and weather and boats that you are you have probably never been "caught" in bad weather, had a bad day of hunting, or had a 30+ year old boat give you a minute of trouble.

We got onto the lake right at 3am, got to our spot without a hitch around 3:17am. The boat sank around 10:45am.

Please try harder...

That's my buddy shane, he's an excellent guy (esp. considering I dumped his butt in the lake) Being a friend I don't tell him what kind of shirts he should or should not wear. This might be a hard concept to grasp.

I actually OWN 2 hen calls niether one is a big name brand one was $7 (6-7 years ago) the other is something a friend gave me. I don't feel I should spend money on calls because I'm really not all that good. (JJ will back me up on this)

No we paid him for our hunt, I probably shouldn't short change myself on the calling. I've had good days and bad days with calling, some days limits, some days bust.

JJ's words if I recall were "thats not too bad" which I translated into, that sucks. He's really an excellent caller, and a great guy.

Relax John. Don't know you Matt but you seem to be a straight shooter.

Re: Species Clarification - 11/24/11 02:46 AM

Again you went across open water in a 15 ft flat bottom boat in 25 plus winds.
Storms blow in all the time I realize that but your still missing the point. Your a guide you should of walked out, or ran the river back to 377, or waited it out or ran the shore line at the very least.

Again your a guide you suppose to know how to run a boat, and what it can handle...but you don't. If you where a regular hunter no one would say a word its live and learn but your not your a professional guide advertising. It's your dismissal of it all this that is very disturbing...

It's apparent I'm not sinking in..at the very least I hope you drop the show and learn from it, that way none of your clients get fished out and or fined in the future..and you have a successful run at guiding. Again your the expert aka guide so make expert/safe calls.

Now I don't do much duck hunting I just come here to watch the show, but dang man you swamp a boat, miss ID a duck, and just admitted you can't call good! So explain to me why a rookie duck hunter like me should pay a rookie guide like you to take me duck hunting?

I think your missing the point, I've been labeled a guide, even though I've never guided a single duck hunt or even attempted to. I simply sell "day leases" probably 50-150 leases per season. I pay for guided hunts 2-3 times per season to take out my grandpa/dad/friends. We usually hunt geese/cranes, pheasant or ducks.

I've had close to 100+ phone calls this season for duck hunts and I've turned every single last one of them down, and explained to them we aren't properly setup (waiting on rain and trying to find the right guy to guide the hunts)

I've referred several of them to JJ at Kent Outdoors because they are good people.

Call it and read it how you will.

As enjoyable as your company has been fellas, I've gotta jet. I've got a hot date with some turkey and ducks.

Have a great Thanksgiving Everyone!!

Well I will not be using his services. I kinda like my guides to know just a little bit more than I do.

Labman what is your problem man? I just said I wouldn't hunt with a guide who is more green than me, and then you jump all over me. Do you guide for him or something ?
