This stuff was planted 2 weeks ago:

I have a couple more hundred pounds coming in this week from the feed store.

When I get it, I will plant where the water is now on this property.

Re: Got millet? - 08/22/11 08:51 PM

I'm interested as well. My buddy went to buy seed last week and the feedstore said not to waste our time and to wait until it cooled off or we got rain.

Any insight on how to get it to grow like that?

TIA

Re: Got millet? - 08/22/11 08:51 PM

Millet is Jap. Millet

Local Feed store is $34.99 (which is up $10 from last year)

if you plant it in a moist soil area (pond base) that will hold moisture, no matter how dry the property gets, it should grow. Millet doesn't need much rain/moisture to grow.

If you have a slowly slopping pond, you can seed it as the water decreases. Like, once a week.

Millet should be planted (in the North Texas area) from the End of July, until the 1st of Sept. After that you take a chance of frost stunting the growth, and not producing a seed head.

I have been planting a few hundred pounds per week for 3 weeks now.

If I didn't enjoy planting millet so much, I wouldn't do it, dang cows, knew this would happen wife.

Put up electric fence last weekend, got a bunch of new coming up, and planted a bunch more, maybe it will take off now.

How long after jap millet comes up can you flood it. My millet is about 4 inches tall right now. I'm thinking I am going to need to water soon.

Thanks

You can go ahead and flood that stuff. I planted a control group in the neighborhood pond behind our house. I hand watered it because the water level kept going down. It stayed at about 3-4 inches. Then, we got some rain a week ago Saturday and brought the pond up enough to cover some of it. The millet that is covered with water has sky rocketed! I bet it's grown 1/2" a day or more.

Re: Got millet? - 08/23/11 05:12 PM

what is the rule on planting and then hunting. A member of our lease said if you plant millet you cannot hunt it for a year? I find that hard to believe if the seed is gone and plants are present.

Re: Got millet? - 08/23/11 05:21 PM

You can plant any food and hunt it the same year. You Can NOT mow or knock down any crop You plant and then hunt it.

As long as you dont flood over the top of the plant, thats the great thing about jap millet! Ours was about 6"-8" then we put about 5" of water across it and it took off! Paid 35.99 a bag for my stuff.

Re: Got millet? - 08/23/11 09:03 PM

How are y'all putting the seed down? Broadcast? Grain drill? Can you just throw it out by hand or do you have to make a seed bed and run a harrow over it?

Re: Got millet? - 08/23/11 09:18 PM

Just like this:

I also have a spreader on my four wheeler that I use...

Bull crap. I saw the pic of you down on your hands and knees pushing each seed into the ground.....

Re: Got millet? - 08/23/11 10:04 PM

I just spread by hand, but I don’t have a lot of area to cover. Throw with the wind and you can cover a lot of area with one throw.

We disc all our ponds then broadcast the seed. Have known people to hand throw it out in moist ground and it works fine that way as well.

Re: Got millet? - 08/24/11 03:15 PM

I find the best results with one of these.

Re: Got millet? - 08/24/11 03:16 PM

^^^^that works well too!! Thats by far the easiest route

Re: Got millet? - 08/25/11 02:38 PM

We were told to losen the dirt tehn spread seed by hand or a spreader. We used a cheap scotts seed spreader. then jut a dusting of dirt over the top, we raked it with a leaf rake.

Re: Got millet? - 08/25/11 03:15 PM

I heard from a viable source that you were supposed to take your shoes off and throw it out over the mudflat and then stomp around on it barefoot like you were makin wine or something.
