Boat light question

So do you guys prefer to run with mounted driving lights on your boat or do you use a handheld spot light. We are getting a new boat and trying to figure out what we really want to do. Thanks for the info guys.

I believe the best thing is a homemade hard hat light, basically it is a spotlight that is mounted to a hard hat. Hook it into your boat battery, and it is pointing to wherever you look. Your hands are free to do whatever.

Boat mounted lights are a hassle in my experience. Depending on your speed, load, weight distribution, and other factors it seem like the lights are never pointed where you need them. To high, to low, when you turn they are not pointed in a direction that allows ou to see what you are turning into.

I'm using all three. Mounted lights and the person I'm with will hold the spot and I will have a hat light.

You'll quickly discover that a light only works when there's something for it to reflect off of, and there's not much of that on the water. If you have fog or driving lights on a boat, you don't get much range. Get a high powered hand held spot light that you can move around and that can reach out and touch something. Mounted fogs are okay for putting out decoys, or moving around the dock/ramp, but little else.

Both, one to light the path and one to search for the next marker and scan side to side. It's also helpfully to flash people off a spot your in.

Thanks for all the help. I think having both may be the key. If your just getting one I think the spot light is the way to go.

Use the PAR36 bulb. It throws a tighter spot, is just as bright, and not as front heavy as the PAR46.

My buddy's boat has the front lights and he uses a q-beam. The front lights don't shine very far, but they greatly help illuminate your area. His can even be swiveled around to shine into the boat which really helps as yall can imagine.

I have a stancion mount remote control go light, and we always have a couple of handhelds to flash people off. The go light works pretty good 500000 candle power, but we like to have a handheld to go along with it in some of the places we go.

I like a 360 degree light high (white light), and little to know light. Your eyes will adjust fine, as long as there is some moonlight. Q beam is about the best option. The only time i use my headlights, is when throwing dekes, and gettin into the blind.

what works for me is 4 led floods in the front of the boat, two are removeable. 2 led dome type two color (red switchable to white) lights for the inside, one hand held spot light and one on my head. the led's are a little pricey but well worth it! led's are also very small power drawl that can be left on without the worry of much battery drain!

Why not go with both? Get fixed lights on the front and have a que beam as an extra light.

Yea ive had it for 4 years the price has dropped like 50 bucks.. You can get one that isnt a stancion, but i needed it bc of my trolling motor for off season
