6.8 SPC Rifle - 12/10/22 11:21 PM

Putting together my dedicated hog hunting rifle. 6.8 SPC Bison Armory Upper with Aero Precision Atlas R One Rail, Aero Precision Sripped Lower, Geissele SSA-E Trigger, B5 Sopmod Stock and Sightmark Wraith 4K Max. Still waiting on a few extras to have it 100% complete. Hopefully it doesn’t disappoint.

Looks like a nice rig. Congrats.

I hopped on the 6.8 train myself just recently. I really can't say why other than I just wanted something other than .223 and 6mm AR. Unless something happens to force a change of plans I'll be shooting it and chronographing tomorrow with some handloads I cooked up using 120-grain SSTs and five different powders. I do hope AA 2200 does turn out to be my powder...if not, I'll have to solve some issues with compressing charges of another powder or four.

That dog will hunt. I've been deer and hog hunting with the 6.8 SPC-II almost exclusively for the last few years and I love it. I'm sure you will too. Best of luck, sir. up

P.S. That don't look like a B5 SOPMOD to me. Nice stock nonetheless. salute

Re: 6.8 SPC Rifle - 12/11/22 04:48 PM

Thanks. I’ve been using Federal Fusion 115 Grain factory ammo and it shoots really good. Sub MOA at 100 yards. I was incorrect on the butt stock, was thinking of another build. This stock is the VLTOR EMOD which is a very nice stock but might switch it out for something with less weight.

Nice.

Now that my daughter has graduated from the 6.8 AR to her 708 bolt gun for general hunting I'm getting ready to buy another Wraith for the 6.8 as well. Then she'll have a night rig too.

Very Nice! Looks like dead hogs and good times in your future!

I haven’t hunted with my 6.8 in about a year. Too hard to find ammo that I want.

2 in my safe. was an early adopter like 12 plus years ago..
killed a LOT of hogs and deer with them

Had many friends buy them after seeing how effective they are

Been using primarily the 120sst the last 5 years or so.. tired of chasing brass and reloading but when I did I LOVED the 95 TTSX

Nice. I've had a Bison barrel for over 10 years and it still shoots straight. I hope you make a mountain of hog bones.

Get yourself a 10 round mag and it will be more handy

Get a 15 and only load 12-13 rounds for reliability - a 10 rounder loaded with 10 will cycle harder for first few rounds due to spring pressure.

I am an early adapter also and have been using 6.8 on pigs for quite a few years.
I have had really good luck with Bison barrels in the past but both my night pig guns run ARPerformance 16" barrels.

I primarily shoot 120gr SSTs driven by AA2200 powder with Remington brass.
I have plenty of components as I settled on the 6.8 early and bought plenty of SSTs, powder, brass and primers to last a while.
I generally load 300 at a session.

Vern 1 is exactly right about the 15's they work great and are low profile and hold plenty of rounds. I keep the 10 rounders in my range bag and I just hunt now with the 15 rounders.

Re: 6.8 SPC Rifle - 12/14/22 07:49 PM

Never had a problem with the 10 rounders whether fully loaded or not, and in the wooded area where I shoot hogs 12 rounds is just extra weight. YMMV

Re: 6.8 SPC Rifle - 12/14/22 09:39 PM

Thanks fellas for the advice. I need to grab some more magazines. I do own a couple of 10 rounders and I think a 28 round magazine. But will definitely get some 15 rounders. Any particular brand you guys recommend for the 15 round magazines?

ASC is about the best you can do, but I wish Magpul would get into 6.8 PMAGs.

Re: 6.8 SPC Rifle - 12/15/22 01:23 PM

I have been using the same PRI 10 round mags for almost 15 years
I have a C Products 20 round I hardly use
In my experience getting off over 10 shots doesn't happen very often unless you are just spraying and praying

Re: 6.8 SPC Rifle - 12/15/22 02:35 PM

My wife, my brother and I have shot 5 hogs with five shots with my 6.5 Grendel shooting them just behind the head. Is there a big difference between the 6.5 Grendel and the 6.8? Maybe more so with chest shots?

Re: 6.8 SPC Rifle - 12/15/22 04:14 PM

PRI mags work well in my rifle.

Now you need a can!!! And dont forget a handheld thermal to compliment your nightvision. Burris TH35 on sale for $800. Cant beat the price for 400 resolution.

Once you get the can and the handheld then you are really 100% ready to go.

I’ve been considering that Burris TH35 but still undecided. Found it for sale not long ago for under $700.

Best brass catcher available, IMO.

brassgoat.com

It'll change your life! Well...it won't load your ammo for you, BUT...

l'll bet those 95 TTSXs did work well. Too bad they're as expensive as they are.

Re: 6.8 SPC Rifle - 12/19/22 05:44 PM

I've been hunting with my 6.8 SPC for a couple of years now. I love that round. I handload 120 SST with A2200 and everything I shoot has fallen dead within 30 yards including some big hogs. I can't say enough good about it. Basically a 270 short in an AR platform with very little to no recoil.

Got into AR15s in 68 about 10 years ago for hog hunting. Been pretty good. You'll get better performance if you hand load and generally OK performance with factory. Happy hunting!

Great set up.

I agree with the above mentioned 15 rd magazine suggestion.

Not sure what batteries that IR light and scope use, but a magpul grip has room for a couple CR123 batteries in a ziplock bag (to emiminate noise from them bouncing around) will fit inside the grip.

Thanks. The VLTOR EMOD stock has plenty of storage for batteries. I bought a external backup battery pack to use on the optic. Planning on getting it sighted in soon and taking it out right after deer season to take care of some hogs on our place.

You will enjoy the 6.8SPC.

Mine has been knockem dead for over 5 years shooting at a fixed distance of 200 yards.

Trouble I'm having is finding more Federal Fusion 115gr ammo.

Can do polymer mags unless you get a specific 6.8 receiver with a bigger magwell. Polymer is too thick.

These guys make one:
