The fates have not been working in my favor lately regarding the pursuit of feral hogs. I’ve only been able to get out a few times so far this year, and the first few times I went the hogs didn’t show up. It’s tough to shoot hogs when they’re so uncooperative. Finally, things turned somewhat in my favor the last time I got out. My video card popped out of my DVR so there’s no video, but I did get a few photos to show.
I was sitting at the edge of a wheat field that had been harvested a few days earlier. A little after 10PM a sounder showed up consisting of 3-4 larger hogs and perhaps a dozen medium-large piglets. I’m guessing the piglets were probably in the 30 pound range, give or take a little. There’s a seasonal creek nearby and they’d obviously been wallowing in it because although I had my thermal sight set on white hot they came in black. They were definitely cooler than everything else out there. Indeed, they were wet and muddy.
They came into the field at a trot, with the larger hogs leading the bunch. Usually the piglets run ahead but the hogs here don’t get a lot of hunting pressure and the sows weren’t at all worried. That changed pretty fast when I opened fire. I put two shots each into a pair of the larger hogs but missed a couple of shots at the piglets as they departed the area. Still, it was a satisfying night considering it’s the first time the hogs have made themselves available to me this year.
The rifle is a 300 Blackout shooting 110 grain Hornady SP bullets. The optic is an IR Hunter MK3 60mm Thermal Weapon Sight.
