First year hunter. Going to be braving the mad rush opening day on a WMA in a national forest. How crazy or scary will it be that first day? How dangerous is public land rifle hunting?

Wear your hunter orange, get in early for your spot, and don't attempt spot/stalk hunting and you should be fine.
The further into the forest you can get generally the less chance of encountering other hunters.

Depending on location, even private can sound like what's currently going on in Gaza/Israel.

It is crazy that first weekend and the deer can feel the pressure in those 2 days. I would go scout ahead of time and I agree go as far away from roads as possible. Have your premade blind and spot ready to go and be there before the sun comes up. Then hope you get lucky.

Pack extra water, bring a lunch and snacks. Alot of hunters go back to camp for lunch and beer thirty, keep the deer moving. Be safe...
