SWFA SS 5-20

SWFA SS 5-20 - 10/20/14 08:07 PM

I'm considering one of these for range toy use, I know there are some SS users here. Any feedback?

Also, I'm debating illuminated vs non. To those that have one, how often are you sing the illumination during the day? I won't be night hunting with it or anything, I have hunting scopes for that.

Other options would be NF NXS (more money of course) and Razor HD (they seem huge in size)

I shoot through the SS many times per week. It's actually my spotting scope for students going through classes. I hunt with it, have shots lots of matches with it and generally worked the heck out of it. Never a hickup, works every time as it should. Only minor complaint I have is that I'd like the reticle to be just a tinsy bit finer. But the reticle being what it is helps in low light. I have the illuminated version and never use it in the day time, only night time hog and predator hunting, which is rare.

NF NXS is a great scope but is second focal plane, that's a no-go for me.

The Vortex Razor is outstanding but it is a heavy scope.

I like the concept of the FFP scopes but don't like the reticle being that thick when at high power just my opinion. I rarely use the reticle for ranging, I dont shoot competition but shoot 1000yrds on my range at home. I use the G7 website to get a baseline, its pretty accurate on doping if chrono your bullet and input all the correct information but not exact so I tweek it on the range and print it, laminate it, and put it on my cheek piece. I'm looking at G7's new range finder, probably will buy it sooner or later but I'm worried for $1500+ it won't be exact. I have the 10X SWFA on a .260 rem and its never failed me tracks perfect and yes the reticle is a little thick.

I've had the SS and the PST. I'd take the SS over the PST most any day. I really like the Bushnell elite tactical line as well. That's what most of mine have but I do have a couple SS's as well. They're really good scopes for the money.

How you liking that 10X for 1000? I know it's possible. I've never shot anywhere near that far with my 10x scopes, but it seems like the target would look mighty small...

Reticle thickness in relation to the target image is the same ratio at every magnification.

OK, let me clarify, the 10X is on my 260 remington model 7 my son shoots it out to 400, I've shot it out to 600 but its not to accurate but for a model 7 its OK. I shoot my 300 win mag, 7mag, and 6.5x284 out to 1000yrds. The 300 has a NF, 7 mag has leupold mark 4, and 6.5 has leupold mark 4. Sorry for the confusion although I should have stated I dont shoot the model 7 at 1000yrds.

Reticle thickness on the FFP scopes seem to increase to me, my friend that shoots with me has one and I don't care for it or the increase in price.

At one point I had the 1-6, 3-9, 3-15 and the 5-20. They're all great. The 5-20 and 1-6 had HD glass and were definitely superior optically.

Illumination...The Vortex Viper I have now has it. It wasn't something that I really felt I needed, but there have been times when the light was real low and a big black hog came slipping in to the feeder and I could NOT put the crosshairs on him. So, with the Vortex I got a good scope and it had Illumination. Can't lose on that proposition. I was out pig hunting in the evening on Sunday (didn't find a pig, unfortunately), but got to playing with the illumination on a coon - which I didn't shoot. At the minimum light setting, I like the illuminated crosshairs, but I just can't see much reason to ever use the illumination at the highest setting. Way too bright. Still, this will be my first hunting season with the scope, so time will tell.

As for the scope itself, I have the 4-16 and I like it quite a bit. And it's much more suited to long distance shooting than my Leupolds. I wouldn't go so far as to say it has better glass than the Leupold VX3's I have, but it appears to be about as good. I had considered the SS scopes too, but weight matters to me and the Vortex was lighter.
