How does the unit look through a 4x day optic being used as a clip on? Or are you better served using the digital zoom with the unit as a stand alone scope....?

Looks like the eye relief would be too short on a bolt action rifle.

Even with a 30-06 shooting 180gr. Bullets? 2" sounds rather short. Want to ensure I would 't get whacked in the eye.

IR Defense IR Hunter MkII 35mm Review

After 2.5 months of use I feel I have used this optic enough to write a decent review. As a person who has never owned a thermal optic before I was very cautious about buying one, as this was a huge investment. My intended use for this optic was primarily hog hunting. After 2 months of research I had narrowed my choices down based off of my budget and peoples reviews of the optics. I contacted Tyler with Ultimate Night Vision to discuss the optics I had in mind. I also inquired about the IR Hunter Mk II, which was a little out of my price range, but was seriously considering it. Tyler took the time to go over every optic with me and explain things in a way I understood.

I decided on the Mk II unsure if it was worth going over my budget. I received my order in 2 days. The following night I took the optic out for the first time, mainly to observe wildlife and get a feel for it. I was impressed with the optic but not overly impressed. After 3 nights behind the optic my opinion completely changed. I learned how to fine tune and adjust settings for different situations and am extremely impressed. I primarily hunt agriculture fields and have not run into a situation where I have not been able to detect and identify deer or hogs (after spending time learning how to properly use the optic) and I hunt in some very large fields.

My last hunt was in the middle of a 110 acre bean field, and was able to ID every large animal at distances as long as, if not over 600yards. The detail at closer distances is pretty impressive, you can even see wet mud on pigs. Zeroing my rifle took me roughly 5 minutes and was extremely easy. You are able to zero the rifle for multiple weapons and can switch between them without having to fire a round. The turret knobs are so easy to use, especially in the dark. After a little time behind the optic I have been able to memorize the menu and can literally adjust anything with my eyes closed.

I read some reviews about the optic having a reduced field of view. While this is a price to pay to have a 35mm piece, I have not run into a situation where I wished I had a wider field of view. I was recently under 50 yards from a sounder of 30 hogs. I was able to acquire multiple running hogs after my initial shot and kill 7 before they disappeared into the tree line. I see no reason to be any closer than 50 yards and acquiring multiple hogs with it was no problem at that range. The different reticles give you options to use the one that works best for you. It is very hard to estimate distances through a thermal, the 18/36 inch MOA makes it pretty simple to judge distance after you use it a few times.

There are only two things I could consider cons for the MkII. The battery life is pretty decent but the more your battery is drained, the optic starts to experience minor issues. This can easily be fixed with the battery extender, which I will be purchasing soon or by changing your batteries. Second, once you power on the optic, you will have to calibrate it a few times. I find that after calibrating it a few times over about 15min that I only need to re calibrate it once or twice an hour, if that. This is not an issue to me at all because I simply power on my optic before my hunt and if I was ever in a situation where time is critical to make a shot and I had to calibrate it, it only takes about 3 seconds.

To sum up my opinion on the IR Hunter Mk II, I am extremely impressed with it. After 5 years in the Marine Corps Infantry, spending countless hours behind thermal optics, the IR Hunter Mk II exceeded my expectations of an optic I could afford. I am also very happy I spent a little extra and chose this one over cheaper ones I was considering.

As far as customer service, I have contacted Ultimate Night Vision 3 times after my purchase to ask questions regarding the optic and for a battery issue with my MDVR. All my questions were answered quickly and thoroughly, and the battery issue was taken care of without question or cost to me. I am a professional deer and waterfowl hunting guide during the fall and winter. I am strongly considering doing hog hunts with thermals and night vision during the late winter, spring, and summer months. If I do, I will use Ultimate Night Vision to purchase all my equipment.

Upgrade options?

Stadiametric rangefinding is widely used in long-range military sniping and is faster than laser range-finding techniques. Electronic laser rangefinders can also give away a shooters position, but a stadiametric rangefinding system is completely covert.

While true, I sincerely doubt that the hogs and coyotes have the technology to detect ir laser rangefinders.

It is nice to see the continued upgrade of the line. Very nice.
