I'm also in the market for new binocs. Been reading about the vortex dimondbacks, they are 200 on amazon.
The lifetime warranty they offer is pretty awesome, might save up some money and snag a pair.

I bought mine as blems awhile back for $169. I really like mine.
I picked up a pair of Vortex Diamondback 10x42 for my wife, $229. Brand new, Awesome!
Better yet, she loves them.

I know they're not 42's, but in that price range the Steiner 8x30's bring a lot to the table.

Sometimes you can find Nikon Monarchs in the Cabela's Bargain Cave for about that.
