Need Input on a good scope for around $200

Need Input on a good scope for around $200 - 10/06/13 10:20 PM

Bought my first rifle last year. A Mossberg ATR 30-06. I chose this rifle after the great reviews on Academy's website. It was a combo and came with a no name cheap scope. So I'm looking to upgrade it. I'm an experienced shot just not familiar with hunting scope brands and such.

What do you guys recommend?

A 3x9x40 in as much scope as you can find in your price range. Look at SWFA's Sample/Demo List and shop it often ..ummmm daily? as the good stuff sells fast. The product descriptions are worth the look/see alone.

Burris is probably the best glass in that price range IMO. Great customer service too.

The scope it came with is a 3x9x40 and I've read that its a Bushnell but it has no markings on it.

Vortex Diamondback. You can get the 4-12x40 for $199. I have three of the Diamondback series and I have been very pleased. It's also very hard to beat the Vortex warranty.

I've known about them for a couple of years, but never met anybody with one. I decided WTH and ordered one, and it came in today. All I've done is mount it and am hoping to get it sighted-in this weekend.

It's not as clear nor feature-filled as my Weaver Tactical scope (Super Slam line), but it didn't cost $650, either. It is indeed a one-piece scope and I take it that it's also a Light Optical Works product, as it's Japanese-made. It is not a lightweight scope due to the monolithic tube, but I'm hunting from a stand. Knowing what I do about my Weaver Tactical scope, I think it will prove to be a great value. I should've got mine when they still had matte finish 3-9X42, so I chose gloss black instead of the silver finish.

The only thing I'm not sure of is will the Nitrex line be warranted? It is an extinct division, although the "Nitrex by Weaver" label indicates it's an ATK product. That said, they bought Weaver twice and sold it once, in between. Nonetheless, I registered it on the Weaver site since the nitrexoptics.com site is dead.

Nikon prostaff series is a good one. I have 3 of them, fixed 4x, 3x9 bdc, and 2-7. All have been good and clear. The 3x9 has been on my tikka 30-06 for around 5 years, give or take. I check it every year and is always on.

Just topped my Howa Ranchland with a Burris Fullfield 3x9x40 from SWFA. Around $200. Good glass for the money. Clear, easy sightin.

Cabelas has the Nikon Buckmaster series 4.5x14x40 on sale for $219.99. One heck of a deal compared to original price of $309

You should be able to get into a used Leup VX-2 or better in that range. New VX-1's can be had for around that also.

Do you know where this scope is manufactured...I realize it is German engineering but I think they are Pacific Rim sourced ? I have a ZA 5 but I can't find country of origin markings...thank you...
