Talley/Remington 700 problem!!

Talley/Remington 700 problem!! - 06/04/13 05:39 PM

Just received my new Leupold VX-R and Talley rings in the mail today. Tried mounting it and I am not able to do so!! mad

My rifle is a Remington 700 long-action (300 Win Mag)....and apparently the rings are about 1/8" too far apart. You cannot get the rings to hit the tube of the scope at the same time. I have both of the rings/bases mounted "in toward each other"....if that makes sense (meaning, the rings are as close together as possible). However, that distance is still longer than the tube of the damn scope!! I am not happy...

Has anyone else experienced this? I assume I'm going to have to go with a scope rail instead of bases/rings. mad

I have a Sako M995 in .338 LM and a magnum mauser .378 Weatherby with the same issues. It's a total pain. The Leupold LPS series (no longer made) has about 6" between bells and the Leica 3.5-14 has about 7" between the bells.

I think you can go with a Leupold base and extended ring system. http://swfa.com/Leupold-Dual-Dovetail-30mm-Rings-P1597.aspx

I would view this as more of a scope problem than a ring/Remmy problem. I had a Remmy long action with the same rings and my Zeiss fit perfectly. Another option might be to have new holes drilled if you are in love with the scope.

Have to love scopes with short tubes. frown I had a heck of a time fitting my Ruger Safari Mag with a low power scope because of the issue you describe. The rings are a long ways apart.

You have a couple of options...

Add a picatinny rail and change the rings.
Get a scope that is longer in the tube
Get a set offset/extended rings.

You might be able to just buy the front extended ring by itself which should give you enough offset to solve your issue. Not sure if Talley offers them that way, but other mfgs do. I've had to do this on my 721 Remington in years past.

Talley makes an extended version for this problem. I believe that you ordered the 30mm Highs (#758700)??? If so, the extended equivalent is part #758X700. Got to love long actions and short scope tubes...

Actually....the rings I ordered are part #750700. Does that mean the extended equivalent would be part #75X700?

There is another forum that Talley's are the preferred choice. You may look there, those people love some talleys

You can email Talley and they will tell you exactly which part number to get. Last year I needed to get a question answered and I went straight to the source. They got back in touch with me within a day or two.

Yes, you are correct. The numbers that I gave earlier are for the mounts with 8x40 screws. I believe that 6x48 is the Remington standard. You might want to verify...

Yes, you have to get the extended but that may not be the only problem you run into. Using Talley one piece on a long action 700 can be a PITA requiring several tries and several scope combos.

I'm not sure of your mm scope objective.

Problems will include.

1. Scope spacing in the rings prior to the taper

2. Foward and aft adjustment...Not much if any

3. If you have anything above a 20mm you'll need the taper of the bell to clear the front block

4. Ordering the right height until you get it right.

5. The worst is if the hole spacing on the rifle is off and you can't get enough windage adjustment out of the scope.

I'm running a VX3 1.5-5 20mm in extra low extended rings and couldn't be happier

The fix is buying a short action.

The absolute worst scope/talley Long action combo is either a flavor of 2-7x or a FX2 4x. Almost impossible.

Haha....I find the idea of "fixing" the situation by buying a short action rifle humorous (even more humorous than TXW's solution of buying a different scope). I have a $1,200 rifle and a $650 scope. I believe I will keep them, and just try different mounting options as needed until I fix things. up

FYI, I placed an order for the extended Talley rings with SWFA this afternoon.

He's not giving enough info like are we talking Talley lightweight integrals?

Particular scope, tube dameter, objective diameter?

Proposed Talley height

Talleys have one flaw, that block of aluminum which can interfere with the bell.

Please keep us posted!

Re: Talley/Remington 700 problem!! - 06/06/13 03:19 AM

I got a 2-7x to have a little foward and aft movement to adjust eye relief but when you pull the scope back eventhough there was enough room between the rings, you couldn't use it because the objective taper would hit the front block. To fix it, you had to get rings so high it looked stupid.

My take is, you either add a 3-9 or higher in medium rings or a 20mm in extra lows.

My extra lows barely leave clearance for the power ring. When I realized an elk of Ram is easy to hit at long range at lower power, It was a no brainer for me because this thing hits the shoulder and is on target. And, its brighter than any 50mm I've ever had.

Best of luck and let us know how it works out.

It is a Leupold VX-R 4-12x50mm (30mm tube) on a Remington 700 Sendero SF II in .300 Win Mag with Talley Ultralight high integral rings.

I just discovered that my damn order with SWFA is backordered....not sure what I'm going to do now.

Sell those and find someone that has a set post what you need on 24hourcampfire and someone will have them

You should be ok with that rig

I ended up cancelling my order with SWFA and going a different route. I bought a Warne Zero MOA rail with Leupold PRW medium rings. Not exactly what I was planning....but looks great, and seems very strong.

Thanks for the input guys.

It gives you better lattitude for sure. The LA and Talleys can be nuts
I've used the same setup and if you can get past the steel weight, its pretty nice.
