Fence brace building.

Fence brace building. - 02/21/22 10:26 PM

My west boundary, along the county road. The brush clearing and the 100 year old fence removal was quite time consuming. But, I finally got it opened up, my bottom strand pulled, and set posts four days ago. I rented the post driver implement for the skid steer. Had a buddy hold two levels, and drove the pipe 5 foot deep for every post. First time doing it that way, and I like it!

Corner, at the creek, just for the purpose of having a corner to hold the future water gap.

In line brace. 6 strands of barb wire will come off each direction. Yeah, it's over built, but I build fences one time.

Line posts, about every 100' +/-. Put kickers on all those as well. This fence should never lean. The kickers go into tree line and are still well off the current county road. They will never be in the way of hay production.

Looks good. I like metal fence posts. Our inherited ranch fences all fell over with a grass fire thanks cedar posts.

Outdoor wood construction is stupid.

Bois d' arc is the most durable there is around here. And even it has a life span.

Is that 2 7/8?

What did it run you?

Re: Fence brace building. - 02/22/22 01:14 AM

2 7/8"

Traded a guy in 2019 for it. I had to work up loads and make ammo for four rifles. But I got a whole bunch of it, and 2 3/8"

It’s still cheaper than having somebody do it by far but I’ve spent more than I cared to on pipe for my front entrance and fence. Stuff has gone crazy.

Always welcome.

I like to build one time, and never touch it again.

Do it right the first time and be done with it.
It's like power tools the most expensive tool you own is the one you buy twice. Meaning you went cheap on the first one.

Nicely done. Need some schooling on that type of thing. Fence on my back 40 needs redone.

Re: Fence brace building. - 02/23/22 01:50 AM

Pretty much most of the schooling is in the pics. Corners, in-line, and line posts if you want line posts. I have built many runs with no line posts.

I try to keep braces 300' apart, or less.

T-posts every 10'

Where did you rent the post driver and how much was it? I have a fencing project coming up and the last one we did them with a 3 point auger which was a pain.

Yep. Line post are just for holding wire. All the strength of a fence is in the corner braces.

United Rentals in Greenville.

Said they've only owned the implement for a little over a year. It is constantly rented out, and everyone loves it.

Yup, they got expensive now. All those years they were $1, now they are $2. Cost me $60.

Yikes.... I paid .83 cents last time I got them from Vitz Metals. I would hate to hear what they are charging now for used 2 3/8" pipe....

Let me know Thumper and I'll join you. Watching Garvey work is fun, especially when having a beer.

Yeah, my joints cost about 1.25 welding rod each.

I would never buy such a chickeshit thing.

Yup, i agree totally. Might work for a temporary fence but not permanent.

Great for you to get your pipe on trade. Prices on pipe have gone crazy.

Fair enough but would be fun to watch them try and get through razor wire.

I have installed it before. One thing you have to take your time with, that's for sure.

Come on girl, I need some help. Mama stopped in front of the shop and let her out 30 seconds after she got home from school. It was dark 10 minutes before we got done.

How much is 2-3/8 going for these days? I have around 150 joints left over from a fencing project that I don’t plan on using anytime soon

Friend of mine was quoted over $3 a foot recently. Never, ever seen it that high before.
