Moultrie D 40 problems

Moultrie D 40 problems - 12/06/09 10:30 PM

I bought a D40 and set it up in my living room to see if it worked and it took a few pics. I then set it out at my feeder and it took a pic of me after i set it up. Well I set in my stand the next day and had deer 5 feet in front of it and no pics. I walk up to it that night and it never takes my pic. I then returned it to BP and got another one and it does the same thing. It works for a few minutes after I set it up but once it goes into stand-by mode for 10 minutes or so it wont wake up. I also noticed it had lick mark all over it where a deer had obviously licked the cover. Anybody else have this problem?

I bought one in August of this year, put it up at my lease first of Oct. and it's worked great for me ever since.

I have three. Two of them work great and one does the same thing that yours is doing. I bought it in the bargan cave at Cabelas, I should have known better.

Does it do it all the time or does it work better if you change the standby minutes? We have 6 of these and other than being battery eating machines they all work great, although they don't have the fastest trigger speed. I'd say take it back again. If you plan on using it very much go ahead and bite the bullet and buy the solar panel/battery combo, you'll be money ahead in the long run. Good luck

It does it all the time I tried all the settings from different number of shots to minutes between pics and if it sits in standby for more than say 10 minutes it just completely turns off. I am considering buying the kit that let you build your own with a standard digital camera or maybe a cuddeback. Oh yeah forgot to mention I called Moultrie customer service friday and estimated hold time was 80 minutes and estimated time to respond to an email request was 2 weeks, what a joke.

The frustrating part of the whole deal is bass pro is an hour and a half away and I did a ton of research on game cams before I bought one. The D 40 has the highest rating on bas pro of all the cams under $250 and a high ranking on cabelas. It also is a favorite of the website that someone has posted a link to on this forum before. THey just rave about how great it is for a $100 camera. Now I am on my second one one and have nothing to show for it. I understand you get what you pay for but it is wasnt $10 or something I mean for $139 it should take atleast some grainy pictures of cows! (Had 20 black angus walk between it and the feeder)

The first one I had would do the same thing. The internal clock would also loose time the longer it was in the field. Finally the flash quit working. This was all in the span of about two months. I took it back and got an exchange. The one I have now works better but still does not seem to want to take pics during transitional lighting (sunrise, sunset). I would take it back while you still can and get something else. I purchased a stealth cam this year and it has worked great.

I had the samething happen to me.... From taking to them....Moltre had a bad piece part on their electronics board that was causing this (basically a bad batch of cameras from your's and my perspective)

But the good news in that you can take it back to Bass Pro (if it is a recent buy) or mail it back to Moltre.

Moltre has a great return policy.... and they will most likely just send you another camera.... that's what they did for me.

I have a total of 8 of these and all the ones I bought prior to last year never have had a problem.... but last year I went through about 6 returns before the problem was fixed.... since then I have had no more problems.

Just talked to a friend that bought one the same day I did and he is returning it today for the same problem. They must have a bad batch. A guy he works with bought one at Academy a month prior and said it works great. Guess I'll return it and get store credit then after deer season get a new one.

I would never pay $200 for a game camera but that's just me. Heck that's half the cost of my lease....haha. I paid $60 for my Moultrie camera and even if it just lasts this year, I'm okay with it.

Same here... exchanged (2) of them for the displays going out. Finally upgraded to the I60. So far so good (four months and counting).

Re: Moultrie D 40 problems - 12/09/09 12:45 AM

my D-40 is the only camera I own that has not given my any problems. Been in the woods for over 3 years

That being said, I have been transferring to all IR cameras and soon to be using the Blackout IR cameras. I say jsut use em till they break and get your $ worth (in your case i see this is a non-issue)

As for Moutlrie CS, I sent my I-40 back for display problems. It was bought on EBAY so i did not have proof of purchase. Although their CS phone line is a ridiculous wait and I never got any emails back. A month later I got a new in the package I-40. Works for me!

P.S. I have had good luck with my cheap wildgame innovation IR

I could go on and on about problems with the D40 and the Infrared 4.0 Megapixel. The D40 woul shut it self off and not trigger, display keeps going out. The Infrared 4.0 has had more displays go out than I care to count.

These cameras really are feature rich - they just need to fix the issues. I have switched them all to the 6.0 units (I have 3) and so far they have been working (2 months)

What is now giving me problems is the crappy 12 volt / Solar Panel for these cameras. They keep going out. I have had to replace these several times now. I love them since it could make your camera work for months at a time without having to empty the chips.

If you have not tried the video mode on this for your capture method, you are really missing out on some cool features. It takes a video and gives you a snapshot as well.

I would highly recommend buying from either Cabelas, Bass Pro, Academy Sports & Outdoors or someone like that. All of these folks with take the camera back in a heartbeat and exchange it without any issues.

Moultie would have you pack the unit send it them and then you need to hope it is back before you go back to your ranch/lease.

At least for me, it has already been a nightmare, going up to my ranch, to find that my cameras last picture taken was me leaving the trail the last time I was there - that sucks.

At least when I have a problem, I can take it back to Academy and they switch it out with no questions asked. Now I am ready to go back to the ranch and install the camera.

Even with the Solar battery, I recommend putting the D batteries to back up the crappy solar panels.
