Grasses for bedding - 12/12/23 02:05 PM

Anyone plant any perennial grasses for bedding areas? What would be best to try? Central Texas.

Never planted grass for that purpose but when we do plant grass for wildlife, like when we switched an improved pasture over to native, it usually revolves around the big 4 grasses

They bed down in native coastal here. The shorter the better so they can see coyotes approaching.

Most FSA offices will push a mix of Indian, switch, big and little bluestem. If you have coastal you may be able to put it into CRP and or other programs

here is a quick blend

Native coastal is more rare than black panthers in NA (i.e. it doesn't exist).

depends on what else is around you if alot of open fields switch would be the best... if heavy wooded area id keep it clean and just do a quality rye for most of the field then with switch about 40yards wide around the perimeter of the pasture... they like transition edges more than anything.... also if you have turkey they will love the second recommendation

I have one place with a couple acres of Bermuda which they pretty well ignore. I have had best luck with bladed (annual) plants like wheat, oats, rye, etc.

I have a hard enough time growing animals plants to eat, much less worrying about where they prefer to sleep. Once I get their appetites taken care of, I will worry about their sleeping accommodations.

Thats where rye comes in best... last well through the new year and further without the rust like oats will get

But is it a happy smile, or an evil smile? cue Navasot's signature...
